D/MATH ELECTIVES PROGRAM OVERVIEW LTC Doug McInvale Electives Program Director 11 July 2012
Electives Program is Nested With Institutional Priorities • Academic Program Goal • Graduates anticipate and respond effectively to the uncertainties of a changing technological, social, political, and economic world. • Mathematics and Science Goal • Graduates are scientifically literate and capable of applying scientific, mathematical, and computational modes of thought to the solution of complex problems.
Student Outcomes-- Mathematics Major • 1. Demonstrate competence in modeling physical, informational, and social phenomena by • Identifying and articulating assumptions, metrics and constraints • Applying appropriate solutions techniques • Interpreting results within the appropriate context • 2. Argue and inquire soundly and rigorously; become independent questioners and learners • 3. Achieve mathematical proficiency in breadth and depth • Understand and apply theorems and algorithms • Understand and apply analytical methods • Understand and apply numerical methods • Understand and apply graphical methods • Understand discrete and continuous structures and processes • 4. Communicate mathematics, both orally and in writing • 5. Use technology to model, visualize, and solve complex problems • 6. Develop attitudes – habits of mind • Creative and curious • Experimental disposition • Critical thinking and reasoning • Commitment to life-long learning • 7. Understand the role of mathematics (in our world) by analyzing applied problems through disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary approaches.
Student Outcomes– Operations Research Major • 1. Demonstrate competence in modeling processes and systems by • Identifying and articulating assumptions, metrics and constraints • Applying appropriate solutions techniques • Interpreting results within the appropriate context • 2. Argue and inquire soundly and rigorously; become independent questioners and learners • 3. Achieve proficiency in operations research – in breadth and depth • Understand and apply probabilistic and statistical models and methods • Understand and apply simulation methods • Understand and apply optimization methods • 4. Communicate effectively - orally and in writing • 5. Use technology to model, visualize and solve complex problems • 6.
Programs of Study in D/Math A Few Observations from My Foxhole… “Math, OR and Applied Stats are among the most exciting and useful academic programs at West Point.” “We compete and compare favorably with other programs of national prominence.” “D/Math cadets are consistently among the top tier in the Corps.” “Our cadets are exposed to a broad spectrum of contemporary topic areas.” “D/Math faculty among the most popular with cadets at USMA.”

How YOU can help… • Identify cadets with the propensity for and interest in mathematics. • Offer Mathematics as an option for them to consider as a major. • Set high standards and expect cadets to attain them, in order to set them up for success in follow-on math courses. • Be prepared to answer questions – know where to get answers • Redbook: http://www.dean.usma.edu/sebpublic/curriccat/static/index.htm • DAC Website: http://www.math.usma.edu/people/counsel/ • Course Pages: http://www.dean.usma.edu/departments/math/courses/elective/default.htm
Best Teaching Advice I Ever Got… • When you teach, erase the chalkboard with an • “up and down” motion…(side-to-side makes your butt jiggle)
