RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 The lecture consists of three main parts: • working in a Board and organisation of everyday life in the AEGEE-Local • activities, which can be organised by AEGEE-Locals • Your local as part of the AEGEE-network
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 PART I working in a Board and organisation of everyday life in the AEGEE-Local
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 Board of an AEGEE-Local: • President- should be charismatic with a deep vision of AEGEE and your local’s work for next 1-2 years; is the face of the association. • Treasurer – takes care of settlement of accounts. • Secretary - takes care of office stuff - like mail, contact with other antennae, contact with AEGEE-Europe. • PR Responsible – is a contact person of your local to the media. Rules the PR committee of your local. • FR Responsible – takes care of finding resources for your local’s activities, creates a companies and funds database, rules the FR committee of your local. • European Events Responsible - organises European Events (SU, conference)
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 Milestones of your work as a Board: • Knowledge transfer - transition period • Set up the goals and deadlines for your future work • Clear task division from the very beginning • Weekly board meetings • Local general meetings • be RESPONSIBLE! Serve as the EXAMPLE!
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 ? Before you decide to work in a Board ask yourself whether you can sacrifice the whole year for AEGEE!!!
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 Not only Board members should be organised. Every local operates more efficiently if it is well structured and its members are busy with their tasks. A basic task division is therefore crucial; in your local the following might be important: 1. Clear board task division 2. Clear decision which board member chairs which commissions 3. Continuous flow of information between board and to members via email, newsletter, meetings etc.

RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 PART II activities, which can be organised by AEGEE-Locals
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 Activities of an AEGEE-Local: Local events European events

RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 Ingredients you will need for successful activities: • High quality human resources i.e. people, who will be taking care of organisation of these events. • Good promotion of AEGEE in your university to get more members. • Clear task division. • Good PR campaign of your event in your city so that you can attract public attention, media, important personalities. • Planning of your local’s activities far in advance. • Efficient FR (as a result of good PR).
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 PART III your local as part of the AEGEE network
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 AEGEE is UNIQUE for several reasons: • So many different locals from different countries • So many different backgrounds from all AEGEE-members • So many events/conferences/Summer Universities are organised every year • So much enthusiasm of so many members to do something for AEGEE at the local or European level • Such a great and strong network; your local is not on its own!!
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 What can the network do for your local? • Calendar of Events: you organise an event and invite others from other locals to join you • Statutory Meetings: you decide with the other locals the future of the association and make a lot of European contacts • Fundraising: the CD has a European Institutions Responsible and Liaison Officers to acquire funds for you • PR: When doing PR you are part of the largest European Student Forum with over 17.000 members in over 250 university cities • Working Groups: You can ask the help from working groups of AEGEE (IPWG, EWG, CWG, ITWG, AEGEE-Academy, etc.) • Other locals: you can organise events together with other locals (TSU, CST, etc.)
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 Problems you can come across during a year in an antenna: 1. You have not been properly prepared by previous board 2. Getting new members and keeping them active 3. Organisation large event 4. Conflict treasurer - president 5. Conflict Europe - Local
RUNNING AN ANTENNA Lecture by Koen G. Berden European School Szeged, March 2001 I am sure you are or you will be able to add your points to this above because running an antenna will vary A LOT per local. Just be sure to do the work which satisfies you, which is interesting for people and makes them fall in love with AEGEE as most of us did...
