Brown/Risd Building the connection
Questionnaire 1) How would you describe your academic experience at (RISD/Brown)? What do you like the most about Brown? What do you like the least about Brown? 2) What are your initial thoughts of (RISD/Brown)? 3) Have you ever taken a class at (RISD/Brown), or participated in an joint events/clubs? 4) Would you be interested in taking a (RISD/Brown) class, or if you have already, would you be interested in taking one again? 5) Why/why not? 6) If so, in what department/area of interest and why?
Existing Connections • Dual Degree Program • Cross Registration (RISD can enroll in Brown classes, Brown classes can enroll in RISD classes) • Access to each schools facilities (Gym, Library, Brown/RISD safe rides etc.) • Teachers (Some teach at both brown and RISD) • Independent study (doable with a teacher from opposite school) • Hillel House (Events: Yoga, Galleries, cultural nights) • Clubs + Teams (Better World by Design, trap team, intramural sports teams such as volleyball, soccer, rugby, etc.) • Mixed Classes (ex. Babsin Olin Class)
BrownLove • Students say they really love Brown : • Say that the community is great • Offers a lot of freedom (“allowed me to take classes outside of my major/immediate filed of interest, so I could decide on my major.”) • Like the people • Academically and socially fulfilling • Dislikes? • “Isolated on College Hill.”
Rhode Island school of arts and crafts • Not “digital/technologically competent” • Labeled RISD as primarily a “fine arts” school • Don’t know as much about design + business aspect • Interested in Painting or Drawing as a class • Just pleasing to the eye, not thought of as serving a function • “ I like art. I can draw stick figures.” -Bio Chem major
The Risd “vibe” • “I met a RISD student and their ‘vibe’ was way different.” • “Unapproachable” “Intimidating” • Brown students could tell we were from RISD
Where to begin? • Doesn’t know where buildings are on campus or where to sign up • Geographically, Brown is isolated, doesn’t interact with downtown/Providence • Need a joint website, more joint events, a joint building
Socialneed overacademicneed • More people that would be interested in a club or event rather than a class, because they are not “artistically inclined” • 1 in 5 of my interviewees had taken a RISD class, out of the 4 people, 2 said yes, 2 said no. Both said that it was due to scheduling. • “seems hard, RISD kids are always busy” (Kristina)
RisdLove • Good academics • Great work ethic of students • Inspirational • Challenging • All LOVE RISD • “Although the classes can be rough and sometime draining, I truly enjoy the learning experience, it is rewarding. Students are so inspirational and it’s so great to see students work and learn from each other.”- Graphic Design Major
Brown Classes? • Usually take classes in languages or sciences • Should open more classes at Brown over wintersession • Seem more eager to take Brown classes than Brown students are in taking RISD classes • “Real college feeling” • “I would like to take Brown classes that RISD doesn’t offer, if our studio classes didn’t interfere and if I had more time.” -Graphic Design Major
Cross registration • Too time consuming and confusing • “Where is the Registrar’s Office?” • “I don’t know the process…”
Brown: “A Real college” • “Prestigious” • Allows RISD students to experience a “real” or “normal” college feeling
Students of Brown • Smart, intelligent • “Think they’re better than everyone else” • “Smart people.” • “Brown socializes more because their curriculum calls for it more than RISD’s.”
