SUPEREGO • Controls our ideals, spiritual goals, and morality – aims for perfection • Opposes the id • Considered our conscience • Attempts to act in a socially acceptable manner • Punishes bad behavior by making us feel guilty
EGO • Controls our reason, intellect, memory, and caution • Purpose is to control the id • Horse and rider • Carry out actions • Employs defense mechanisms • Organize our thoughts and make sense of the world
