  3. The history – British influence • tribes: the Firbolgs, the Fomorians, the Tuatha De Danann, the Milesians, the Celts and migrants from Scotland • united in five provinces for defence – Ulster, Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Meath • 5th century St. Patrick’s introduces Christianity to Irish

  4. 1155 king Henry II of England - the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland • the 14th century the English pass laws that prohibit alliance with the Irish - hatred and ineqaulity • Henry VIII sets up the Church of England • the War of the Roses - English authority limited to Pale –area in and around Dublin • laws passed by the Parliament to rid Ireland of Catholicism

Organisations in Ireland – 19th C 1/ the United Irishmen - democratic republic in Ireland independent of Britain 2/ The Home Rulers - run its own affairs but remain a kingdom with the English monarch 3/ Irish Unionists - retain the Act of Union 4/ Irish Nationalists - nation forged out of the people living in Ireland

Division of Ireland • the Unionists demand that the north of Ireland is treated seperately from the rest of Ireland – succeeded • RESULT: the Irish Republican Army (IRA) - killings and terroristic attacks • 1921 a truce between the IRA and the British - 'Irish Free State' • Internment set up to tackle down the IRA members – arresting innocent people

  8. Recent times • 1993 the Downing Street Declaration -the UK proclaimed it had no further interest in the Northern Ireland • united Ireland is possible if a majority desired so. • Even today, the conflict between the Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic is not solved

  9. The Republic of Ireland • Irish name: Éire • occupies five-sixths of the island of Ireland • bordered by Northern Ireland • surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean (the Irish Sea, St George's Channel and the Celtic Sea) • a parliamentary democracy and a republic • president: Mary McAleese

  10. Ireland was one of the poorest countries in Western Europe • joined the European Union in 1973 • 1995 to 2000 - period of high economic growth - call the country the Celtic Tiger • The official languages are Irish and English
