Transitioning from Individual Contributor to Leader/Manager Part of the Professional Interactions & Communications Seminar Series Monday, March 24 ~ 12:00 - 1:30pmCarrie Hall Conference Room Please register online The transition from individual contributor to leader or manager can be challenging because it requires a new set of perspectives, skills, and responsibilities. Individual contributors are often promoted because of their knowledge and expertise, but their success as managers depends directly on their ability to get things done through others. This session will provide insight on the main challenges in moving from technical contributor to manager, help identify the traits of successful leaders, and guide participants in how to acquire and strengthen leadership skills. The format is highly interactive with a focus on practical techniques and applications in current roles.

Overview • In 1991, the Smith Family Foundation created a grants program to support promising junior faculty who were beginning to establish their own independent laboratories and research programs. Now in its 23rd year, this Program has funded 137 scientists for a total of $25.1 million. • Applications may focus on all fields of basic biomedical science. Investigators in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry and engineering) with biomedical research projects are also encouraged to apply. • Funding Period • Dec. 1, 2014 - Nov. 30, 2017 • Award Amount • Five $300,000 awards at $100,000 per year, inclusive of 5% institutional overhead • Application Materials • www.tmfgrants.org/Smith • Eligibility • Full-time faculty whose first independent appointment began between 7/1/12 and 12/1/14 • Two applications from any School or College within a MA academic institution • Two applications from any hospital or free standing nonprofit biomedical research facility in MA    • Two applications each from Brown University and Yale University • Applications from women scientists are encouraged  • Internal deadline: April 15 • Contact Karen for more information

FACS best practices discussion April 4 after lab meeting HIM 680 This meeting is to discuss some of the issues we have had with the FACS machine on the HIM side and how we can prevent these issues moving forward. Even if this does not directly affect you, we urge everyone who is a FACS user to attend.
