“In fact, corporations are the infants of our society - they know very little except how to grow (though they're very good at that), and they howl when you set limits. Socializing them is the work of politics. It's about time we took it up again.”

Training • Importance of training as a ground for learning • Training: Game Ratio; 2:1 to 4:1 • Challenging, active, age appropriate sessions • Concepts of “flow” and periodization • More verbal in training sessions; much less verbal during games
Coach as Facilitator Create active training that replicates game environment Teach rather than talk; show rather than tell Understand developmental characteristics of age group being coached; tailor training accordingly
Coach as Educator; Coach as Learner Teach with a variety of styles and methods Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the game; hence, be a lifelong soccer learner
Coach as Mentor Look like a coach; professional attire lends credibility Model the highest standards in ethics and interpersonal behavior Educate the whole player, as much as possible; soccer can be a vehicle for teaching life skills
Teaching Mechanics • Progressive Methodology • Approaches to instructing and correcting: • * Command: the use of explicit direction • * Questioning: the “Socratic Method” • * Guided Discovery: creating exercises in training • in which the players are expected to solve • problems presented by the exercise
Teaching Methods • Stopping the activity: freeze action, review what occurred, rehearse with correct picture, restart with success in the targeted technical execution or tactical choice • Using a natural stoppage to review a success or address a breakdown • Individual mentoring within the ongoing flow of an activity (not commentating or cheerleading) • Usually players respond better to more corrections early in the training session and more free play toward the end of the session
