Recruitment & Organising This presentation is a reflection of our recruitment system! Important to realise is that military personnel in the Netherlands have strong Unions and have far more rights than in most countries in Europe! But how we organise our recruitment (policies) within our unions is part of the third presentation.
Recruitment & Organising Why is the image of a (military) trade union / association so important? First of all for the recruitment of new members and will be addressed by this presentation. Secondly it will also benefit the way to retain your existing members and is part of the second presentation.

Recruitment & Organising • Attracting new members to join the union, by offering them:- A recognisable organisation for soldiers, from boy soldier until beyond retirement • Clear pay system for members based on rank or civil position in the Military- Legal assistance and advice in conflicts with the Defence organisation (including juridical advice and assistance at Court)
Recruitment & Organising • Attracting new members to join the union, by offering them: • First day of boy soldiers in the Forces, unions are able to promote themselves to them during special moments • = Unique situation! • - Establishing good working conditions and salaries • A clear and sound PR policy

Recruitment & Organising • Attracting new members to join the union: a Challenge- In the Netherlands – union membership is based on a cost-benefit analysis by our military personnel • However paradoxically members do not actually want to engage themselves in the work of the union • Or at least have to be convinced to some extent, which then underlines the need for a strong image/visibility

You need a strong image and visibility • But remember : members do cost-benefit analysis! Most of them do not want to be involved! 4
