  1. Amityville Warriors 44 G Defensive Lineman Manual Adam Hovorka Adam Hovorka- Amityville High School Defensive Coordinator

  2. WHAT IT TAKES TO PURSUE: • Mental Toughness and the willingness to hustle each and every play • Visualize pursuing and making great plays • Physical conditioning is necessary so that you can have great pursuit on every play. HOW TO PURSUE: • Play technique and gap responsibility first • Take correct course (pursuit angle) to the ball that will put you in a good position for cutback. • Never follow the same colored jersey • You have to want to be first to the ball.

  3. Physicality The ability to play physical is a must. After a game win or lose we want the opposing team to say wow those guys brought it every play Playing Physical Takes three things • Ability to stop the run- if you want to be a physical football team you better stop the run • Strength and conditioning- to be physical you must be strong and in shape • Heart – the biggest muscle in football is the heart if you want to be physical than you will be !!!!!

  4. HAVE FUN • Football is a game, therefore you should be having fun • We will be an attack style defense therefore opportunities for big plays will there for the taking • Pressure should never be an issue this will always be a game; win or lose you will still have people that love you

  5. No Excuses • Excuses are for bad players, bad teams and losers. • Winners do not complain or explain. Complaining is embarrassing • Only worry about what you can control not things that you can not; officials, weather ,etc. • If you make a mistake learn from it do not blame any one but yourself. • The highest compliment a man can be given is that he is a stand up man. • If you made a mistake stand up to it

  6. Characteristics of a Great Defensive Player • Desire and Determination • Pursuit: Run to the Ball • Smart: Know Game Situations and opponent • Be Aggressive: Love to Tackle Love to Hit • Let yourself be Coached: Understand the Defense • Communicate with your Teammates on the Field • Be Confident • Gang Tackle

  7. Defensive Players $ = Stud Defensive End aligned to the right/left call (run Strength) Must be physical and strong E= Evil Defensive end Aligned to the opposite of the right/left call Must be Quick and athletic chase guy T = Tackle: will align to the strong left/right call with the Backer Must be the stronger of the tackles has to hold the B gap N = Nose: will align opposite to the left/right call Must be quick enough to penetrate

  8. O O O O O O D C B A A B C D Defensive Alignments O O O O O O Defensive Gaps 7 4i 9 9 7 3 1 3 5 1 5 4i 0 0 6 4 4 2 H 2 6 The defensive player’s down hand should be even with O Lineman’s Shoulder. This can be modified with a tight and loose designation For Linebacker Alignments just add a zero to the alignment Example the Mac playing head up the Guard would be a 20 technique

  9. Pre Snap Movement and Shifting Pre-snap Movement: This is very important to our style of play. It consists of misaligning or faking a stunt then right before the snap moving into your proper alignment. This is something that must be continually worked on. The more movement we can give the offense before the snap the more confused they will be on their blocking assignments. D backs need to do this as well, showing zone and stepping up into man or showing bump and bailing before the snap Shifting: This is done by showing one defensive front or another then just before the snap the Mac will yell move then the defense shifts to the new front. We will always move from base to the other defense called

  10. Base With the backs in a split backfield the backers will adjust to a 30 tech and a 10 tech 3 3 $ T N E 4 4 5 5 ST W B M C C FS

Defensive Line Stunts

  24. Keys to Defensive Line movement • Aiming point is the neck of the adjacent lineman • 1st step is a 6 to 8 inch step; if you are going right step with the right and if you are going to the left step with the left • With your 2nd step you must bring the opposite arm and rip through, grab grass and get skinny • Penetrate only to the heels of the offensive lineman • D lineman can align tighter to the direction that they are going to • D linemen must align in the stance of the direction that they are going, going right, right hand stance • DO not get washed down, if you feel yourself getting washed stop and fight the pressure • If you do not feel pressure you must redirect, be an athlete!

  39. Defensive Line Play • Stance • Technique • Reads • Escape • Pass Rush

  40. Defensive Line Stance • Feet face man on, shoulder width apart • Back toe to heel relationship • Hand down to the man you are shading (Right and Left stances) • Pressure on fingers, weight going forward • Down hand should be in front of eye • Opposite hand should be down in front of you just off the ground • Butt up, neck bulled and eyes up • Find the football, if you need to turn your head than do it

  41. D Line Technique • Get Off The most important aspect of D Line play is getting off the football. You must see the football and react. This will be drilled everyday and in all drills a movement key will be used. Your 1st step is with your back foot replacing your down hand. Stay low and bring the hands • Use of hands This is what separates the defensive and offensive lines; the use of our hands. Each and every play we will shoot our hands (USC Technique). • Inside hand aiming point is the v of the neck • Outside arm aiming point is the triceps. • Strike with Thumbs up and make contact with the heel of the hands • Must bring your hips and feet when you strike the offensive lineman. • Forceful and violent

  42. D Line Technique 3. Bench After proper hand placement, chest plate and triceps you must bench press the offensive man off you, separation is the key 4. Escape This is where you have the opportunity to make the play. Use your hands by either push/pull, rip or swim techniques to get rid of the Offensive Lineman. Get that man’s hands off of you and run to the football 5. Pursuit and Finish Run to the ball and make a tackle

  43. Base Reach, Double Team Down Down Kick Down Trap Inside Pull Outside Pull Pass Defensive Lineman Reads

  44. Base Block Block by the man you are aligned on trying to drive you out or back T G C E N Defeat the base block by standing up the Offensive Lineman, protecting your gap and escaping to the football

  45. Reach Block Block by the man you are aligned on trying to get horizontal movement and take away your assigned gap T G T C G TE E N T $ Defeat the reach block by having a good get off; if you are in a stalemate situation fight the pressure, slide your feet and get penetration, inside foot must work upfield, do not go past three yards of your initial alignment

  46. Double team Block Block by the man you are aligned on and the adjacent alignment designed to move you from your assigned gap T G C G T TE E N T $ Defeat the Double Team block by first defeating the man you are aligned on. In the N case it is the Center and the Tackle’s ex is it is the OT. When you feel the pressure from the second player turn your butt towards him, get low and sit on the stool and work to split the double team. Never go down, unless you plan on sitting next to the coach

  47. Down Block When the man you are aligned on blocks down to the next defender inside of you T G C G T TE E N T $ • Here the OT on the Evil and the Guard on the T blocked down. When your man block s down you do two things • Get a piece of him, try to make sure he does not get off clean to where he is going (Claw) • Squeeze down and look for blocker coming (Bend)

  48. Down Kick When the man you are aligned on blocks down to the next defender inside of you and the FB comes to Kick you out FB T G C E N • Here the OT on the Evil blocked down. The Evil should do two things • Get a piece of him, try to make sure he does not get off clean to where he is going • Meet that FB on as deep as possible aiming for his inside #

  49. Down Trap When the man you are aligned on blocks down to the next defender inside of you and a Offensive lineman comes too Kick you out T G C G E N • Here the OT on the Evil blocked down.
