  3. 2008: Cards we were Dealt • Arc IMS with Customized Microsoft Web Programming Language • One Man/Full Time Vendor (Mostly Unavailable) • No SQL or Web Programmer on Site (IT) • Manual 2 Server System for Security • Limited Budget • Staff of Two • Slow Bandwidth

  5. First a Band-Aid, Then a Solution • Hired Withers & Ravenel (Future Mobile 311) to help with the Web Programming, and IMS Server updates for a couple years • Came to the conclusion that for a little more $ they could host the website offsite

Look at us Now: Website Hosting with ConnectGIS • Benefits: • Do not have to worry about updates to servers, operating systems, & ESRI software for webserver • Local Web Server – Local NC Company • Don’t have to worry about web based training for small staff (Web Programmer*) • More time to focus on core county GIS needs • One less server to pay for and maintain • Offsite back-up of critical data sets

GIS Growth in Alamance County • Have gone from 7 GIS Software Users to 27 • Have gone from 1 GPS Unit to 7 Units • From less the 1,500 visits on the GIS Website to 15,000 visits per month • Scanned 20,000 Historical Tax Documents on Archived DVD • Teach a man to fish: GIS growth & service philosophy
