Types of Plate Boundaries Chapter 8 Section 2
Types of Plate Boundaries There are three types of plate boundaries; • Divergent Boundaries (plates moving apart) • Convergent Boundaries (plates moving together) • Transform Boundaries (plates sliding past each other)
Divergent Boundaries • These boundaries occur where plates move apart from each other. • An example of where this is happening is the center of the Atlantic Ocean. • A rift valley is formed. • A rift is a gap or space between the ridges.
Convergent Boundaries • These boundaries occur where plates move toward each other. • When the ocean plate slides beneath a continental plate it is called a subduction boundary. • This forms a deep-see trench. • See diagram on page 178.
Convergent Boundaries Cont. • When two continental plates move together this is called a collision boundary. • This type of collision causes the crust to push upward and form mountains. • The Himalayas are an example of this.
Convergent Boundaries Cont. • When two ocean palates move together an arc of volcanic islands often form. • There is also earthquake activity. • An example of this is the islands is Indonesia. • The denser of the two plates is the one to subduct.
Transform Boundaries • This occurs when two plates slide along each other. • Earthquakes happen at these boundaries. • The San Andreas Fault in California is an example.
