  3. How did Teotihuacan get its name? Teotihuacan was named by the Aztecs, who discovered it after it had fallen into ruin, although it was created in around 200 BCE. The name means “place where men become gods”. It was not, however, made by the Aztecs. It was made by a group that the Aztecs called the Teotihuacano. How are places named in the United States? Where do place names come from?

  4. Teotihuacan has two large pyramids, as well as one that is dedicated to the god “Quetzlcoatl”. Quetzlcoatl was an important god in the Aztec religion. He had the head of an alligator and the body of a snake. He was considered the god of the wind, technology, sciences, and the arts. He was the only “white” god—he had a beard, and light eyes. This became important when Hernan Cortes came to conquer the Aztecs.

  5. Como puedescomparar el “National Cathedral” al Teotihuacan? Querepresentan los dos? Cuales son lassemejanzas? Cuales son lasdiferencias? Vocabularioimportante: Monumento: Construir: Significado:

  6. There are two major pyramids in Teotihuacan: La piramide del sol y La piramide de la luna La primade del sol has 248 steps, and is 200 feet tall. There is also a natural cave underneath. There was also a marketplace in Teotihuacan, where the people could go to trade.

  7. Teotihuacan has one large street that goes down the middle, called “La calle de los muertos” (the street of the dead). The Aztecs believed that all the smaller temples along the side of the street were actually tombs of great men. Archeologists have found the bones of mammoths in Teotihuacan. Some think that the Aztecs may have found those as well, and thought that they were human bones. This could explain why they might have thought that the people who lived there were gods.

  8. Imagine that it is 2000 years from now, and an archeologist comes and digs up your home/town. What will they find? What will they think? What incorrect assumptions could they make from items that they might find? Why must we be careful about what assumptions we make from archeological findings? Remember that your sources are only going to be durable things: steel buildings, graves, and trash heaps…

  9. An archeologist has come upon your town one thousand years in the future, and is carefully digging up the surrounding area. What is she/he going to find? Because you know how difficult it can be for archeologists to discover and uncover the truth, you decided to leave behind a time capsule with a map inside that describes your community. • Draw the map of your community that will allow the archeologist to understand your daily life. Don‘t forget to include: • Where you buy your food • Where you go when you’re sick • Where you go for fun • Where you go shopping • Where you learn • Any place else YOU think the future should • know about!

  10. Because of your understanding of Teotihuacan, and the difficulties that archeologists must have when they uncover someone’s home, you decide to also leave a map of your home, explaining what things are for. Draw a map that includes at least 15 labeled items. Example: El televisor es para mirar programas.
