Some definitions and propositions • Two Components of Project Columbia • Computational/Technology Research • Computational Services to Support Science and Engineering • Computational Services are funded by Sponsors, through Project Columbia, to execute Science and Engineering Applications, which are also funded by the Sponsors. • Project Columbia is expected to have external, non-NASA, links. • The Computational Services and Computational/Technology Research are different, require different management considerations, require a formal interface process
Some definitions and propositions • There are three layers of function • Service layer • User layer • Customer layer • There is a Service Manager for Project Columbia • Works at service layer • Project Columbia, esp. Service Manager, reports to two primary customers; i.e. the customer layer • Science and Engineering Applications • Sponsors
Some definitions and propositions • The Science and Engineering Applications determine the Functional success of the Project • Expected to be populated by Science and Engineering managers at the performing Centers who represent major applications or application groups • Expected to meet monthly or quarterly • The Sponsors determine the Programmatic Success of the Project • Expected to be populated by HQ Program managers who require high performance computing for success of their Missions
Some definitions and propositions • The Customer/User Technical Group serves as an interface between the Science and Engineering Applications and Project Columbia. It works at the user level. • Expected to be populated by principal investigators and those responsible for the actual execution of the applications. • Expected to be directly involved in the management of Project Columbia … the day-to-day customer interface • Administration: Policy and Operations represents a function to balance conflicting requirements, resources, and expectations. • Expected to house a “Project Manager,” who represents the project as a whole.
