  1. 1.1 Safety Obligations You need to be over 16 to hold a Recreation Marine Drivers Licence in Queensland You require a RMDL (Recreational Marine Drivers Licence if you are operating a vessel with more than 6 horsepower of propulsion Things Change: This course represents a snapshot of the current regulations which are subject to change. Bulletins are not sent out so the best way to keep abreast of changes is the website www.msq.qld.gov.au

  2. General Safety Obligation Boat Operators must ensure their vessel is: • Safe • Properly Equipped and Crewed • Operated in a safe manner

  3. Alcohol and Drugs • Blood alcohol limit of 0.05 if you are on open licence, 0.00 if on provisional licence • An anchored vessel is deemed operational, so there needs to be at least one licensed, sober person onboard • There are many more enforcement officers on the water. Breathalysers are operated not only be the Water Police but also: • Fisheries officers • Parks and Wildlife officers • Maritime Safety Queensland officers

  4. Pollution • Don’t throw garbage over the side. Take a bin or a bag and bring garbage back to the shore • Oil, Chemicals and Fuel; Up to $350,000 fine for recreational boats discharging • Sewage; Nil discharge in Smooth Waters

  5. Marine Parks • $500 fine for fishing in protected zone • $400 fine for exceeding 6 knots in a protected zone • Recommended smartphone app is ‘The Fishing Mate’ which shows where you and where the protected zones are.
