  2. About the project • USDA/CSREES Hispanic Serving Institutions Education Grant • $249,753 over 3 years • New personnel: • Dr. Judy Casey, Co-P.I. • Giselle • Claudia • Angel

Project goals • To understand the uses of English in all of your courses from YOUR perspective • To document your English language needs as a student of agriculture at UPRM • To design, based on these documented needs, a curriculum for INGL 3201 and 3202 • To pilot that curriculum in the academic year 2011-2012

  4. The idea behind the grant

  5. Your Participation • Observations—a selection of your courses • Interviews--short interviews before/after classes • Materials—lend to us for copies • Focus groups —meet once each semester to discuss your experiences/English needs

  6. Benefits to you • $200 per semester stipend (for up to three years) • Eligible to compete for a trip to the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences Conference in Disney, March 2010 • Eligible for $1000 competitive NRCS internship stipend

  7. MANRRS 25th Annual Conference • March 24-27, 2010 • Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Orlando • Career Fair & Training Conference • Professional development & networking • English immersion experience

  8. NRCS Internship Stipend • Must interview and get summer internship with NRCS • Compete for a $1000 stipend which will help with travel costs

  9. To sign up • Give us copy of your matricula • Fill in current contact information form • Sign IRB permission form • Meet again at the end of the semester in small groups
