  8. Samuel Gompers: AFL • “Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation.”

  9. 1st Labor Day??? • Maybe started by Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the AFL??? • He suggested a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and cared all the grandeur we behold.”

  10. Peter McGuire • The Father of Labor Day, of New York City, in 1882 introduced the idea for the holiday.

  11. Or Matthew Maguire, a machinist • In 1882, a secretary for the Central Labor Union in N.Y.

  12. 1st Labor Day • Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in NYC.

  13. In September 1892 union workers in New York City took an unpaid day off and marched around Union Square in support of the holiday.

  16. Labor Day Legislation • 1885 began state legislation. • The 1st Bill passed was in Oregon1887. Colorado, Mass. N.J., & N.Y followed.

  18. By the end of the 1880’s • Connecticut, Nebraska, & Pennsylvania had followed. • By 1894 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers.

  19. June 28, 1894 • Congress passed an act making the 1st Monday of September of each year a legal holiday..

  20. A song: "Union Maid" • There once was a union maid; She never was afraid Of goons and ginks and company finks And the deputy sheriffs that made the raid. She went to the union hall When a meeting it was called, And when the company boys came 'round She always stood her ground.

  21. Waitresses at Woolworth's • staged an eight-day sitdown strike in 1937, singing, dancing, exercising, doing each others hair and nails until finally management recognized their union and gave them a five-cent per hour pay hike.

  27. The American Worker • Earned the tribute of Labor Day…… for creating a nation of strength, leadership, and freedom.

  28. Almost a century since Gompers spoke • Labor Day is seen as the last long weekend of summer rather than a day for political organizing.

  29. In 1995, less than 15 percent of American workers belonged to unions, down from a high in the 1950's of nearly 50 percent, though nearly all have benefited from the victories of the Labor movement.

  30. Friends and families gather and clog the highways, and the picnic grounds, and their own backyards -- and bid farewell to summer.
