  3. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover • Founded 1831 as an engineering school • Member of TU9 – German Institutes of Technology • 9 schools and more than 160 degree programs • 21,000 students 3

  4. Clausthal University of Technology • Founded in 1775 • Awarded the status of a royal mining academy in 1864 • 3 schools, 33 degree programs • 3,100 students • Combining economic & natural sciences and engineering to form a well-balanced qualification profile 4

  5. Engineering Internships: The program • Short term summer program for engineering students • Start in 2008 • Program initiated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) • 8 weeks plus option for up to 12 weeks • 2 options: • Direct application to the host universities (Leibniz Universitaet Hannover and Clausthal University of Technology) 2.500 € for 8 weeks incl. placement, accommodation, field trips, German Language Classes etc. • Application through ISEP (placement only in Hannover as CUT is not an ISEP member) fees to be determined by home university, ISEP benefits: 450 Euro/month 5

  6. Program features • Internship • Language Classes • Joint Field trips to • Berlin (4 days) • Nationalpark Wattenmeer (Tidelands National Park, 3 days) • Day trips to Hamburg & Bremen • Cookouts, parties, theatre etc…. 6

  7. The internship • Students are matched with departments of their interest • Total immersion in working groups/labs • Depending on knowledge: individual research work can be carried out • Presentations in weekly round tables and during final session 7

  8. Basic German • Introductory language training during the first week • Daily German Classes • Language tandems 8

Program characteristics • Integration and immersion • Individual placement of students in research groups • Study buddies and language tandems • Combined activities with other groups • Living in host families (if requested) • Research experience • Individual research/study project or internship

  10. Application through ISEP • Exchange balance: 0.25 • No program fees (2.500 Euro), but ISEP fees at home university plus some additional fees for excursions • ISEP benefits: 450 Euro/monthly (accomodation and meals) • Acceptance of ISEP health insurance

  11. Difficulties faced in the first year • Matching of students and research groups / lack of exchange of pre-departure information • Online forum for pre-departure information has not been used • Language course (time and frequency)
