What is Oracle VM • Oracle VM is an enterprise-class server virtualization solution • Easier to deploy and manage applications • Four times more scalable than VMware • Lower cost • Suitable for all data center workloads • 90+ Oracle VM Templates available for enterprise software • All Oracle software is certified Confidential
Why would we choose to look at Oracle VM? Confidential
Why • Oracle software is licensed per CPU core or named user • OVM is the only officially supported x86 virtualization platform • OVM is the only x86 virtualization platform that Oracle recognizes Core/CPU partitioning • Saving us thousands of dollars in licensing and hardware cost
The good, the bad and the challenges • What do we like about OVM • What improvements could be made • What challenges have we faced Confidential
The good stuff • Free to download and install (support is not free) • Thin cloning • Basic virtualization features • Initial installation was easy to set up • Live migration between physical servers • Auto migration when in maintenance mode • Performance is good • Dynamic resource allocation Confidential
Where they need to improve • GUI is clunky and clumsy • Limited monitoring • Have to manually create MAC addresses for each VM guest • Only one admin session to a VM at a time • Network resiliency Confidential
The Challenges • Oracle Support • Understaffed • Duration for resolving cases • Escalate everything • Their motto: “send me logs” • Encourage them to use WebEx • Inefficient communications with Support • Product feels young, immature, not as polished as other products on the market • Had to reinstall OV manager multiple times Confidential
VMware comparison • Adding disks is more complicated • Can’t make network changes without shutting down guest • No live migration of VMs across storage arrays • Importing templates, assemblies, ISO etc. has to come from a FTP or webserver • Booting to ISO is more complicated • No snapshots Confidential
Other comments • Most of our issues center around Oracle Cluster File System • Need solid networking foundation • Oracle tells us they are committed to the platform • Getting Oracle partner involved Confidential
Our future Do we plan on using OVM for production? Maybe Confidential
