Medical Education and the Kent and Medway context Medical student numbers - Government controlled HEFCE funding bid; 1,500 new places Bid judgement criteria: • Approach to ensure access and successful participation for students from under-represented backgrounds; widening participation • New provision located in geographic areas prioritised by the Government; health inequalities • Demonstration of plans to develop high-quality training placements; established mechanisms • Focus on prioritised specialties of general practice, psychiatry and any other shortage specialties • Innovative curricula.

Canterbury Christ Church and University of Kent Our university partnership • KMMS bid: • A joint initiative, joint leadership • Draws on the best of, and collective, resources of both local universities • Uses lessons learnt from other joint ventures • Uses existing systems and processes, i.e. V4M • Sound business case, shared risk • First call for medical school student numbers in UK without any underpinning capital investment.

  4. Kent and Medway Medical School vision: A beacon for first-class medical education and research, and the first choice for all those aspiring to achieve excellence in person-centred medical care in the UK.

Bid success confirmed in March 2018 • KMMS will be: • the first medical school located in Kent and Medway • delivering undergraduate medical education • working with our local education providers (i.e. health and care providers) across Kent and Medway primary, community and acute sectors. • KMMS will have a distinctive identity • KMMS branding • KMMS URL www.kmms.ac.uk • Email address • Have a separate HEI reporting system (UCAS/TEF/REF/ NSS)

The offer Recruitment focus: - Local offer for local candidates - Widening participation Curriculum focus: - Primary Care/Mental Health Interprofessional practice Health inequalities focus to drive future improvements. • Joint Award CCCU/UoK • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery • 5 years minimum (6 with intercalated degree addition) • Open for applications in the 2019/20 cycle • Students arrive September 2020 • 100 home places - incmax of 7 international.

  7. The student journey • Year 1 and 2: • - Based at universities in Canterbury • Early Clinical Placements in Primary and Community settings across Kent and Medway. • Year 3 -5: • Clinical Years, based almost exclusively in clinical settings • Secondary acute care placements across Kent and Medway, organised to link ECPs and secondary care.

The location • JULY 2018 • Currently; GOVERNOR’S HOUSE at CCCU provides roadside location and accommodation for the small KMMS core project team. • Sept 2020; • Academic Home on both Canterbury campus sites; • Universities are repurposing estate plans to support this. • Nov 2020- JAN 2021 • Facilities will need to be available within primary, community care providers across Kent and Medway to support student experience • Sept 2022 • Facilities will need to be available within acute care health settings providers across Kent and Medway to support medical students.

A high quality student experience • General Medical Council (GMC) • 8 stage approval process • Brighton and Sussex Medical School Parent medical school: • Provide GMC-approved curriculum • Offer advise and support • GMC requirement Health Education England; KSS; Key Partner Education Training and Placement Tariff Kings College Medical School Existing Placement Use All Local Education Providers (H+C Organisations) Human, and resource capacity development Policies and process to support student success

A joint school across both universities • A medical school that spans both institutions • Overarching Joint Executive Board • Head of School: Founding Dean Recruitment 18/20July 2018 • Founding Dean will report to both universities - Pro Vice-Chancellor (Med Ed Development) at Christ Churchand Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor, UoK. • Each University will ‘service’ the school in distinctive professional service functions • Close operational partnership working to ensure high quality student experience • Project implementation and delivery through Project Management Office • PMO appointed - Steve Nathan • Clear Project governance and architecture to support delivery.

Developing staff team • By 2020 Delivery Phase KMMS Core Team: • Founding Dean • KMMS core Academic team • Programme Director / Professional Lead role • Administrative Lead role to ensure Medical School requirements are appropriately serviced by both universities • Supported in placement by: • Primary Care and Community Clinical Educators (2020) • Acute Care Clinical Educators (2022) • During implementation phase: • Founding Dean • Project Manager • Key co-ordinator and administrative support roles • 12 university based workstream Leads. • The team will expand over time to ensure readiness for 2020 delivery.

  12. What next - how can you be involved? • Welcome Founding Dean • Detailed work on curriculum design • Develop relationship with BSMS • Work with HEE-KSS to support funding for practitioner engagement • Sector-wide legal framework development • Submit GMC Stage 3 (of 8) Approval Process Autumn 2018 • Work with Medical Education Directors, CEPNS, Public Health and HEKSS; determine current placement capacity drive future development/ design. • Set up Advisory Boards (Clinical, Staff, Students, Service User) Fundraising/Sponsorship Group • Determine academic and research subject expertise within both universities • Build on existing, and develop, the educational capacity within local health and care organisations • Develop the HR Framework to support the engagement / contribution of health care professional experts from the Public and PVI sector. • Structured Engagement routes into KMMS; CEPN (Primary and community care) Medical Education Directors (Acute Care).
