What is work-life balance? • “Having sufficient control and autonomy over where, when and how you work to fulfil your responsibilities within and outside paid work” • Family friendly vs Employee friendly
Why do nurses need WLB? • 49% nurses have children living at home • 15% have caring responsibilities for elderly relatives or adult with care needs • Workplace stress is rising – need for leisure, learning and relationships. • Ageing workforce - retirement
RCN Principles – flexible working • Policies should be agreed not imposed • Should provide mutual benefits to staff and managers • Recognise diversity of needs while maintaining team work
Flexible working options • Part-time working, Flexitime, Annualised hours, Compressed hours, Term-time working, Swapping hours, Career breaks, Voluntary reduced hours, Working from home • Flexible shiftworking & self-rostering • Flexible bank working
Who has the right to request? • The right to request flexible working is to be extended to about 4.5 million parents of children aged up to 16. • Under the current rules the opportunity is limited to parents whose children are under six or disabled.
How can you influence? • Ensure your employer is aware of flexible working options for nurses • Ask to see the written policy – raise awareness and initiate dialogue • See part 5, sections 33-35 of NHS Ts & Cs handbook • Discuss options with colleagues
How can you influence? • Request staff survey • Suggest joint forum - developing policy • Identify best practice • Encourage staff to find out what is available • Being supportive of colleagues
