3 Part Presentation • Identifying responsible recyclers • Guaranteeing data security • Market conditions & equipment values
Research Potential Recyclers • Get a list of recycling vendors • Develop score sheet • Visit potential vendors
Vendor Qualifications • Physical location & condition of plant • EH&S Compliance Programs Implemented • ISO or other certifications (there is NO EPA certification) • Reputation and experience in industry • Proper insurance • Site security (surveillance 24/7)
Environmental Compliance • Ask for proof of recycling • Where & how materials are processed • Look in dumpster and areas around building • Check how employees sort materials • Ask about end markets • Does vendor check environmental compliance of end markets • Transparent Bills of lading
End Markets • Will vendor share end markets with you? • Does vendor use actual bills of lading? • Will vendor show you purchase orders for materials? • Does vendor ship unprocessed materials for recycling overseas? • Does vendor provide end market auditing for environmental compliance of markets?
CRTs • Does vendor disassemble CRTs in-house? • Where is CRT glass processed? • If not, where are the End of Life CRTs processed? • Has downstream facility been audited? • Ask for copies of Purchase Orders?
CPU Teardown • Does vendor disassemble CPUs and other electronics In-House? • If not, where are these materials processed? • How are environmental and data security issues addressed? • Data security is of the utmost importance • Can you view process?
Data Security • Does vendor resell hard drives? • Are hard drives wiped to DoD standards? • Inspect the wiping station • Does vendor grind data containing devices? • Is the grinding done in-house? • Does vendor charge for these services? • Does vendor give a certificate of destruction?
Selecting the Vendor • Identify the most sound processes • Ask colleagues about experiences w/ vendor(s) • Some may have tried more than one vendor • Compare services • Does vendor accept all proposed materials
Market Conditions • Bad and getting worse • Steel off by almost 70% • Copper from nearly $4 to under $1.50 / # • Nickel from over $15 to under $5 / # • Aluminum, Zinc, Lead all off by 40%+ • Gold under $850 / oz • All PMs down
Will it Improve • YES…….but when? • Credit market remains tight • Containers in Pacific w/o buyers (bankrupt) • Consumer demand lowest in 34 years • Unemployment highest in 20+ years • Economic slump is WORLDWIDE • Government’s injecting money into economy
What this means to us • Vendors will make smaller margins • Machines will remain in service longer • Many electronics recyclers will disappear • Companies will pay more for services / receive less for materials • Non-Profits may struggle w/ higher demand / fewer materials
Asset Recovery • Strive for reuse of your obsolete equipment over recycling • Extends life and helps environment • Revenue is generated to pay for other services • Your recycler has this service available, even if they do not let you know, as they do it
