Unit 9 Saving the earth
Water Pollution Rubbish Desertification Deforestation Air pollution Starvation
Discussion • Which one is the biggest? Why do you think so? • What/ who causes the problem? • What can we do to solve the problem?
Which problem do you think is the biggest one facing the earth? • The water pollutionis the most serious problem, because we need clean drinking water to survive and because animals and plants must have clean water ,too. • The air pollution is the biggest problem. Because if the air is polluted, there will not be clean air for us to breathe, everybody will get terrible diseases.
Which problem do you think is the biggest one facing the earth? • The biggest problem facing the earth are starvation and desertification. If our land turns into desert, we won’t be able to grow enough food. That may cause starvation. People who are hungry must get help. There are many rich countries and they should help people who can’t get enough food.
What/ who causes the problem? • Water pollution and air pollution are caused by factories and cars.Garbage is a serious problem because we buy products that use too much wrapping and then throw away the garbage, often in the streets or in nature. Our need for wood and fuel cause deforestation, which in turn leads to desertification.Starvation is mainly caused by the uneven distribution of wealth and sometimes by natural disasters.
What can we do to solve the problem? • If we try to “repair” desert areas and protect areas that are in danger of becoming desert, we can reduce desertification. We may be able to reduce starvation by redistributing the wealth of rich countries, by providing education and technology to developing countries, and giving monetary aid to disaster-stricken areas.
What can we do to solve the problem? We can reduce air and water pollution by using new technologies and using less energy. We can also be more careful with our water, try to use less and recycle as much water as possible. We should never throw garbage in the streets or in nature, try to recycle or use less packaging. We should plant new trees and we can also try to use less wood to reduce the effects of deforestation.
What do you expect to learn in this unit? • We expect to learn more about the problems facing the earth and what we can do to solve the problems. • We also expect to learn words that we can use to talk about nature, ecology and the environment.
Pre-listening for Part 1 April 22

Pre-talking But why can’tstop the pollution? Why doesn’t our government shut down the factories that pollute the environment badly? coal
Maybe they think the factories are more important than the environment. Because the government can get lots of money from factories. If they shut the factories down, it will not be able to get so much money. And this is not good for the development of the city or town.
Different people have different opinions. They may not agree with one another. So sometimes it’s very hard to make a decision and to make a change. For example, we know that coal is a valuable resource that can be used to produce energy, but it also causes serious pollution.
What should we do with it? Maybe you have different opinions and you don’t agree with each other. So we need to have a meeting to discuss this problem. coal

Pros Cons • Cause pollution • Destroy the environment • This damage isn’t repaired • Only caring about making • money is so selfish • Produce harmful/ • Poisonous smoke • It is bad for/harmful • to our health • A valuable resource • Produce energy • Offer jobs to citizens • Help develop economy • Make people earn more money • Money is important for children’s education… • We are responsible for future • Use coal in a new and clean way
Useful expressions We must make sure that … It’s clear that… I believe that we must … I can’t imagine that… If nothing is done…, then… I’m all for… Sure/Certainly/Absolutely.
