When authors persuade you, they are trying to get you to do something. What are some things an author may try to get you to do?

There are 7 different techniques an author may use to persuade you to do something. These are called “Tools of Persuasion.”
Name Calling • Points out the negative so another product seems better • Says “Other Mascaras Fall Short” tells readers to try Maybelline.
Endorsement Uses Julian Hough to promote proactive. • Using celebrities or experts to help influence your decision
Repetition • Repeats the information so you can remember it • Head on! Apply directly to forehead. Head on! Apply directly to forehead. Head on! • This one has a subway picture on it at school. Air and Rebut the Other Side’s Point of View • Tells the other side’s point of view and why it is wrong • I believe kids should study everyday. My opponent says kids should spend all day watching television and playing video games. If kids don't study, how will they ever learn? • Progressive tells the other’s prices, and then tells you why to go with them.
Association • Presenting a positive image or idea to try and make you feel the same way about something else. • We want students to grow up to be thin, happy, and healthy. Candy machines are not good. • Gatorade has a lot of vitamins and minerals.
Stereotype • Uses unfair images of a group to make a point • All straight A students are nerds. • Girls like to play with dolls is a stereotype.
Bandwagon • Suggests that mostly everyone else is doing it • Everyone is wearing “Shape-ups” so you should buy them. • Buy me a cell phone, Mom. Everyone else in the 5th grade has one.
