International Volunteer Day 2008 OVERVIEW
What is International Volunteer Day about? Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/40/212 on 17 December 1985, governments, UN and civil society organizations have successfully drawn together volunteers from around the world to celebrate the special day on the fifth of December every year. IVD provides a unique opportunity to highlight the achievements of the millions of volunteers worldwide and to encourage more people globally to engage in volunteer activities. The premise underlying IVD 2008 is that voluntary services are needed more than ever to tackle areas of concern in the social, economic, cultural, humanitarian and peace-building fields.
IVD 2008 in Jordan: Introduction • Through the facilitation and coordination of the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV) in Jordan, the IVD 2008 National Steering Committee (NSC) was established in order to prepare for the IVD’s activities in 2008, consisting of 25 members from government agencies, UN agencies, non-profit organizations, the private sector, media and volunteer-involving organizations. The IVD Day Jordan will bring all sectors of the community together to celebrate the values that underpin volunteering.
