  3. Learning Objectives • To begin to explore the relationship between media and democracy • To begin to question if free media is a requirement for democracy • To explore how the media can influence Government and the public

  4. What have we done so far? • How media influences the public • Questioned how much we can trust the media • Discovered how we can influence the media… and change the world • We’ve also been working on our own media project, creating a school prospectus…

  5. Today.. Media and Democracy • We know what media is…but What is ‘democracy’? ‘’Power to the people’’ • Equality • Freedom…….Freedom of Speech?

  6. Free Speech? Free Media? Can a democracy really exist without free media and freedom of speech? This clip – a normal member of the public has been mistaken for ‘The Dictator’ – and has ended up on a public platform speaking to millions…. If you could speak to the world…what would you say?

Media and Democracy It’s a love / haterelationship • It ensures that citizens make responsible, informed choices rather than acting out of ignorance or misinformation. • The information media presents to us checks what elected representatives are doing for us…or not • A democracy requires freedom of speech – the media can help to provide this

  8. ‘Miss?...Why are we in these random groups?’ The Blue group is ‘Traditional Media’ - Newspapers & large TV channels etc. The Green group is ‘New Media’ – Social networking sites, websites, blogs etc. The Red and the Orange groups are the public. The adults in this room are now ‘The Government’

  9. I am the Home Secretary. • I want to pass a new law in Parliament • It may affect some members of the public a little…. • It may affect some members of the public A LOT • My new law I want to pass? ‘All young people under the age of 18 now have a 9pm curfew’

  10. Your Groups • Some groups are For the new law • Some groups are Against the new law Can you use your influence using the Media to change the Government’s mind and drop the new law before it’s too late? Which groups will win? You decide.
