Attribute: Setting could be a real place. “Getting through my first two classes smoothly is pivotal for me to have a good day. And I was able to get some of my homework done in the library during break, giving me more time to work on Mama’s assignment, which is also a good thing.” (12). “Yeah,” I say, closing my locker and taking his hand. “Would you mind if we stopped by the mall on the way home?” I go in for the kill. “I need to take something back.” (155). “There’s a disco ball dripping blood in the center of the gymnasium ceiling, handing from the scoreboard. Everyone’s taken their costumes to a gory edge, making me and Mickey look like virgins.” (165).
Attribute: Because the main character is working to restore her friendship back with her now Frenemies. “You were never my friend,” Nellie says, egged on by the eyes of her puppet master; Tania looks like she’s enjoying watching the Black girls tear at each other. (94). “Remember, Jayd, true friends help each other in their time of need, even when they won’t admit they need it,” my mom says, her thoughts again invading my space.(120). “Would you feel the same way if your ex-best friend ratted you out?” she says. And she’s right, I have wanted to kill Misty several times in the couple of years I've known her.(138).
Attribute: This novel is realistic fiction because the main characters encounter real life conflicts and real life situations on a day to day basis. For the first time in a long time I called in sick to work this morning. Summer was disappointed but sounded really concerned. I started my cycle yesterday at work, and she gave me this book by an author name Queen Afua with all kinds of recipes for healing a woman’s body. Thank goodness Simply Wholesome is like a modern botanicals, with all kinds of herbal teas and tinctures to help ease my discomfort. (111) The bus rides to school this morning were unusually annoying, with my cramps still in full effect. It’s break, and I really just want to life down on a bench and soak up some of the sun’s warmth; it always relaxes me. I just need to switch off my books before I chill. But to my surprise, Nellie’s waiting at my locker. This can’t be good(121). When we get back to campus, Mickey and Nigel are in his car kicking it. We pull up right beside them, but they hardly notice, I’m almost finished with my food, and my Coca-Cola is next on the list. I can take my time since I’ll be waiting for another half hour, at least. But everyone else has to get back to class. Speaking of which, Kj, Del and C Money pull up on the other side of Nigel, creating an awkward sandwich. Everyone exits their cars almost at the same time as the warning bell rings(127).
EVALUATION: Is Frenimes a good example of a realistic fiction? L. Divine did an excellent job creating the setting of the average teenagers day-to-day drama in high school and life. The author was able to create an image in the readers mind through description, and details about setting and the different characters.
