  2. Mission Statement • Build a device designed to be used by an individual or group of individuals in a developing country to pasteurize water to a level where is it safe to drink. Specifically, to a developing country where utilities may not include electricity. • Pasteurization: is the process of heating water below its boiling point to drastically reduce the amount of bacteria, viruses and protozoa in the water. Water and other substances are held at an elevated temperature for a given amount of time until the safety zone is met. Adapted from RJS Thesis.

  3. International Decade for Action • United Nations sponsored effort • Two Goals for 2005-2015: • reduce by half the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water • to stop unsustainable exploitation of water resources. • Funding for this project comes from the EPA’s People Prosperity, and Planet (P3) program

  4. Quantifying the Need 5000 children a day (1.8 million per year) die in the world due to diarrhoeal diseases, from WHO Water for Life, these diseases are largely attributed to the absence of clean safe drinking water. WHO, Water for life

  5. Solar Pasteurizer with Integral Heat Exchanger (SPHINX) • 1st generations device • P07401 • Team has an opportunity to draw on the knowledge base of the first generation

  6. Closing the Gender Gap • Unfortunately, in developing countries it is largely the responsibilities of women to gather water. • Women often have to walk long distances, carrying heavy loads • This responsibility often keeps them from completing school, making it practically impossible for them to escape their circumstances • Basic access is considered less than a 30 min round trip, and families require 26 gallons a day (World Health Organization clean ) • Women in southern Pakistan go on a water search, most also carry their young children • http://www.waterencyclopedia.com/Da-En/Drinking-Water-and-Society.html

  7. Opportunities • Looking for culturally sensitive engineers • Due to budget restrictions electrical and computer components are not expected on this project, therefore, no electrical or computer engineers will be needed • Work within a team focusing on helping a large percentage of the population with a fundamental need. • Impact developing countries on many different levels such as economically and gender equality. • Think globally, interact with officials in Venezuela • On this device the understanding of thermal and fluid modeling with be extremely important. It will be necessary for students to learn programs such as Pro-Engineer, Fluent or Lab view.
