  2. Elie Wiesel • Born on September 30 1928 • He is a writer • Political activist and a Holocaust survivor • Author of over 40 books • Best known is Night • Night is a memoir that describes his experiences during the Holocaust and his imprisonment in several concentration camps.

  3. Background • Born in Sighet, Maramures, Kingdom of Romania • He had three sisters, Hilda, Bea, Tzipora • After the war, Wiesel was placed in a French orphanage • There he learned the French language • There he also reunited with both his older sisters • 1948, Wiesel began studying philosophy at the Sorbonne.

  4. Night • A memoir written by Elie Wiesel • Based on his experience and as a young Orthodox Jew • Rewrote a shortened version of the manuscript in French • Published as the 127-page novella La Nuit, and later translated into English as Night • He had trouble finding a publisher for his book, and initially it sold few copies.

  5. Accomplishment • He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for speaking out against violence, repression, and racism • The Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind”
