International Trade AS AN ENGINE FOR DEVELOPMENT Labor Standards: Labor standards are matters of rights and justice and should be treated as such It is not in the best interest of the poor countries when labor standards are attached to trade agreements Recent US-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA) has been criticized for its lack of attention labor standards

International Trade AS AN ENGINE FOR DEVELOPMENT Labor Standards: Recommendations: Civil society must focus its attention on the core labor standards Lobby to enforce labor standards independently of trade. Labor standards are national responsibilities. Work one-on-one with national governments Lobby to spread support for the implementation of the ILO’s Special Action Program Against Forced Labor to non-participating countries, ensure it maintains local involvement-Brazil, South-East Asia, China, India, Pakistan, Nepal Campaign for strong labor protection clauses and full adoption of the ILO core labor standards Lobby to make UN’s Global Compact initiative a binding one
