  2. What is Nissen Fundoplication? Nissen fundoplication is a laparoscopic (keyhole) surgical procedure for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the main symptom of which is Acid reflux occurs when the acid from the stomach travels back into the oesophagus (food pipe). GERD usually occurs due to the weakening of the valve that connects the oesophagus to the stomach - the lower oesophageal sphincter. In this surgery, the top part of the stomach is wrapped around the bottom end of the oesophagus. This method is called fundoplication.
