  3. Orientation Part I Orientation, Part I: Advising and Registration Orientation Part I will address your academic transition to Stony Brook University: advising and class registration. Information sessions on student clubs/organizations, career services/ internships, campus-wide support services, commuter student services, student life, pre-professional information will be discussed at Experience Stony Brook on Sunday, January 22, 2012.

  5. Transcript Evaluation Information College transcripts and AP scores are sent to the Transfer Office only. The Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) reflects Stony Brook’s general education requirements only. Transfer courses for the academic major will be evaluated by the Undergraduate Program Director. Please provide a copy of all unofficial transcripts that will be kept on file within the academic department. The Transfer Credit Evaluation does not include any credits or exam records from High School. Please send the official high school transcript if you have met Skill 3-Elementary Foreign Language Requirement by having scored an 85 or higher on the Foreign Language Regents exam, or if you have any AP Language exam scores from high school. Please contact the Educational Testing Services (609) 771-7300. Stony Brook University’s school code is 2548. NOTE: Colleges do not forward the High School record to Stony Brook. The Transfer Office may not have the last semester’s grades. The Transfer Office need the official transcript for each school attended. The mailing address is listed on the Unofficial Transfer Credit Evaluation form and the card attached to the T.C.E or the Course Equivalency sheet. All accepted credits will be posted to your Stony Brook record in time for the next semester class registration.

  6. Accepted Credits / Class Year What is myClass Year? The class year is based on the number of completed credits in which a grade of C or better or Satisfactory “S” grades were earned. Only course credit transfers, not the grade point average. U1: Freshmen (0-23 credits) U2: Sophomore* (24-56 credits) U3: Junior** (57-84 credits) U4: Senior (85+ credits) * Undeclared students must declare a major when 45 credits are earned towards the degree. **TAP Recipients with 57 or more credits must declare an academic major by February 10, 2012. . For more information on TAP requirements go to: www.stonybrook.edu/registrar/tap or refer to the online Spring 2012 Undergraduate Bulletin, under the Financial Information section.

General Education Curriculum The General Education Curriculum at Stony Brook is the Diversified Education Curriculum (D.E.C) The D.E.C is a general education program that is integral to most college and university curriculums that introduces students to a breath of knowledge within a balanced liberal arts framework that complements the depth of study provided by the major field. The goal of the D.E.C is to enhance learning during the university years and later. The College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, School of Journalism, and the School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences follow the DEC requirements as outlined in the Degree Requirements Checklist, page 2. The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences follow the DEC requirements as outlined in the Degree Requirement Checklist, page 3. NOTE: DEC D is required only for Computer Science and Information Systems majors.

Degree Requirements The Six Degree Requirements Completion of all Entry Skills and DECs. 39 Upper Division Credits (300 level and higher) A minimum of 120 Credits for the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences. Exception: 127 credits for the Journalism major 128 credits for Engineering majors 4. A minimum cumulative grade point average of a 2.0. Major requirements. Residency requirement. All Six Degree Requirements must be completed before the degree will be conferred.

  9. Second Bachelor Information The Five Degree Requirements for Second Bachelor Students 1. 21 Upper Division Credits (300 level and higher) 2. Residency Requirement. 3. Major Requirements. 4. A minimum cumulative G.P.A of a 2.0. Completion of DEC Category H, I, J and K only. These courses must be completed at Stony Brook. All sequential bachelor’s degree candidates must complete courses judged equivalent to Stony Brook’s general education requirements in English composition and mathematics or complete these courses at Stony Brook. This will be noted on the Unofficial Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) form if these two requirements have not been satisfied.

  12. Course Selection and Registration What Should I Take my First Semester? Register for a Winter Session. Register for appropriate major courses. Register for one or two major related courses. Register for entry level Skill and DEC courses not satisfied through transfer credit. Register for an elementary foreign language course, if applicable. Two semester sequence: 111 & 112 or a one semester course: 101 Register for an appropriate writing or math course, if applicable. Register for ADV 101 Transfer Seminar Course. First semester class schedule: A combination of major and general education courses. First Semester Transfer: Full-time 12-16 credits Part time 01-11 credits.

  14. 1 to 1 Advising Meeting Tips for a Productive AdvisingSession The academic advisor will assist you in choosing the appropriate courses for the first semester at Stony Brook. Inform the advisor of your intended major and/or special interests (pre-health, pre-law, secondary teaching, etc). Inform the advisor if you have taken introductory courses for the major at the previous college or university that you had attended. Refer to the Undergraduate Bulletin supplement for course descriptions to ensure that you do not enroll in the same course at Stony Brook. Use the Program Planning Worksheet to write down your course selection.

  15. Wrap Up What Happens Next? For those who need to take the proctored math exam an OL will walk you to the test site. You will be dismissed by groups to the 3rd floor for your 1 to 1 meeting with an advisor to select classes. After the individual advising meeting, you will register your classes in SAC 305 or 306 and receive a printed copy of your Winter and/or Spring 2012 class schedule. You are done! Visit the Campus Bookstore, Financial Aid Office, Campus Residences Office, as needed. Meet family or guests in the SAC Lobby. Please note: All new Transfer Students must attend Experience Stony Brook scheduled for Sunday, January 22.The semester begins on Monday, January 23, 2012.
