  1. Why need for improved estimation of line reliability? • Increasing interest in reliability of lines, especially in de-regulated environments • Need for advanced tool with fewer experts within utilities • Need to include insulator pollution performance in reliability calculations

  2. LPE Line Performance Estimator Software based on recent break-through in statistical evaluation of pollution related flashovers, based on Cigré principles

  3. LPE Line Performance Estimator Software for estimation of electrical performance of transmission overhead lines, using performance databases, based on: • Environmental stresses • Pollution and ice • Lightning • Altitude • Line configuration (incl. clearances) • Type of insulator and its dimensions • Success of auto-reclosure after disconnection due to fault

  4. LPE - Statistical approach Stress Strength Risk for flashover

  5. LPE - Stresses and methods used • Lightning overvoltages • Backflashover rate (Cigré/IEEE method) • Shielding failure rate (IEEE/Cigré method) • Switching overvoltages • Switching surge flashover rate (IEC 71) • Service voltage, pollution, ice and snow • New STRI method (published at IEE in may 2004), based on IEC 71 principles

  6. Line sections in LPE Ice Pollution Lightning Altitude A B

  7. LPE - Line Performance Estimator Input: Environment, line- and tower configuration, insulator type and number, grounding conditions, voltage level Output: - Failure rate per line section and whole overhead line - Causes of outages

  8. LPE benefits Utilities: • Gives guidance when designing new lines or when upgrading existing lines • Selection of insulators based on total line performance, using an unique method for evaluating the risk for pollution and ice related flashovers • Select clearances based on lightning and switching performance • Identifies the weakest part of a transmission line and the main cause of outages • Expandable by user or STRI(tower type, line configuration, overvoltage profile;insulator performance modules) • Excellent tool to increase and maintain engineering know-how within the company
