Finnish Universities • 20 Universities and out of them: • 10 multifaculty universities • 3 universities of technology • 3 schools of economics and business administration • 4 art academies • + National Defence College (Ministry of Defence) • Basic missions: • Research • Education based on research • Societal interaction

Reform of the Degree Structure – A State of the Art • The University Act (645/1997) was amended on July 2004 and will come into force on August 1, 2005 • Adoption of a system of easily readable and comparable degrees, Diploma Supplement, and the ECTS • 1 August 2005, adaptation of the two-tier degree system, normally (3+2) and the ECTS • ECTS and Diploma Supplement already used in international student mobility schemes • Universities have a statutory duty to issue a DS to the student on request • The periodization of the Academic year, 4 periods, two each semester • Harmonisation of Grading Scales • Individual Study Plans

  4. Principles and Measures • Research based education • Student-centredness • Feedback • Intensified study guidance and study plans leading to the graduation • Study progress check points • Curriculum design • Teaching and learning environment • Student services • Follow-up and evaluation

Academic Curriculum Core Analysis- dimensions of the core • Working life relevant knowledge (professional/occupational core) • Basic knowledge of discipline (scientific core) • Understanding of multidisciplinarity (integrative core) • Knowledge shared by all students (compulsory core) • Balanced relation between amount of the new information and the time in use (pragmatic core)

Academic Curriculum Core Analysis- levels of the ACCA • Core: “must know”, approx. 80% • The knowledge necessary to become a professional (theories, models, methods and principles of the discipline) • Complementary knowledge: “should know”, approx. 15% • The deepening of the methodological knowledge and familiarising with different applications • Special knowledge: “nice to know”, approx. 5% • Profound understanding of an individual area of the discipline

Masters´ Programme and the Bologna • Aleksanteri Institute coordinates a national Master's degree programme in Russian and East European studies • Thirteen Finnish universities form the network for 150 participants in the Masters’ Programme 2003 • Offers a separate study module, which can be integrated into a degree programme • Is controlled by the Executive Board representing all member universities

Cross-border cooperation • Finnish-Russian Cross-border University Consortium • Aim: Joint degree (masters´ programme of 120 ECTS) • Fields: History, Information Technology, Business Administration, Forestry, Public Health, International Relations • University of Helsinki, University of Joensuu, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Petrozavodsk State University, Saint Petersburg State University, European University at St. Petersburg • All programmes should be launched in 2007 • Financed by the Ministry of Education (Finland, Russia) and the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs
