Sify - Who are we ?Profile vs. Topic One of India’s largest private IP/MPLS Service Providers • MPLS enabled IP Service Provider – 935 nodes => 400+ IP/MPLS POPs • Most services operational on fixed wireless broadband access => many links [management, services are all on IP] • Enterprise Business Services – DIA, MPLS VPNs => many many customer links - IP again • Consumer broadband service – IP based ETtH, WBB Access – IP again • Other consumer services – Organized chain of cybercafés => many PCs within Cybercafés – IP again
Sify - Who are we ?Profile vs. Topic IP is our DNA
IP address Depletion ?What is the impact One of the India’s largest private IP/MPLS Service Providers • MPLS enabled IP Service Provider – 935 nodes => 400+ IP/MPLS POPs • Most services operational on fixed wireless broadband access => many links [management, services are all on IP] • Enterprise Business Services – DIA, MPLS VPNs, DCN services => many many customer links - IP again • Consumer broadband service – IP based ETtH, WBB Access – IP again • Other consumer services – Organized chain of cybercafés => many PCs within Cybercafés – IP again How do we grow the network if there are no IPv4 addresses ? • How do we spread fixed wireless access reach ? Every BSTN [full-load] requires – 240 addresses – Mgmt/WAN ONLY How do we add more business customer and more services ? • How do we add more consumers and manage higher concurrency ? Growing umber of IP end-points within a home – More IPs !!! • How do we add more services within the e-ports and also add more e-ports ?
IPv6 in SifyOther business Drivers • Business Drivers – As we see it • With the hosted and collocated contents - IPv6 Network access support at the Data Center. • Customers demanding IPv6 transport solutions. • Gaining the technical competitiveness with advanced services on IPv6. • Strategies in preparing new services, with competitive advantage. • Enterprise Customer perspective. • With need for keeping up with the technology advancements and being futuristic. • Rolling out peer-to-peer applications mandating routable IP address space for every end-point.
IPv6 deployments in Sify Sify is the pioneer in testing and deployment of IPv6 technologies and its associated services in India. • Sify has a dual-stack (IPv4 & IPv6) compliant edge with an MPLS enabled NGN core supporting transport of IPv6 packets alongside IPv4. • With the dual-stack edge, Sify can offer IPv6 VPN & Internet transit services to its enterprise customers. • All the four Internet Data Centers are IPv6 enabled and supports IPv6-aware services. • Sify has deployed http://sify.com as the first dual-stack commercial content portal in India.
IPv6 deployments in Sify Sify is the only SP member in the project 6Choice, a India – Europe cooperation for promoting IPv6 adoption. Sify is funded for developing case-studies based on its experiments to promote IPv6 migration in the Industry. Some of the projects include, • Enabling dual-stack for consumer access network environment. • Helps consumers with IPv6 compliant desktops to connect to IPv6 public Internet. • Also helps in building networked home solutions with the huge number of IPv6 address space. • IPv6 transport support for data center networks. • Supports customers hosting IPv6 enabled contents in our Datacenters.

Integration StrategyThe Approach • IPv4 OFF! & IPv6 ON! – Not something to have any day in the foreseeable future. • IPv4 & IPv6 will co-exist for sometime in future. • IPv4 implementations should support its successor IPv6 in all aspects. • Careful planning and education crucial for successful integration and transition. • Start with the dual-stack SP edge to enable IPv6 service offerings.
Dual Stack Approach Application Application [IPv6 Enabled] TCP UDP TCP UDP IPv4 IPv6 IPv4 IPv6 Data-link (Ethernet) Data-link (Ethernet) Key factors • Both IPv4 and IPv6 stacks should be enabled. • Applications can use both. • Choice of stack based name lookup and preference. [IE Browser prefers IPv6 stack]
Integration StrategySome Guidelines Basic steps in integration common for enterprise & SP environments, • Addressing scheme for IPv6 • Services with IPv6 like Multicast, DNS, QoS etc. • Network Security • Routing Protocols • Network Management and other OAM related aspects. • Resources are shared when IPv4 & IPv6 co-exist. • Memory and processor requirements - to be evaluated. • Look for HW-based forwarding for IPv6 in the near future
How to get there… Today’s scenario in SP networks, • Core - It is either Native IPv4 or MPLS with associated services. • Services – MPLS L2/L3 VPNs, QoS... Or L2TPv3, QoS, Multicast…, Datacenter, Consumer services etc. All this to be IPv6 compliant for an ISP to be successful in integration.
IPv6 : MigrationAdapt, integrate & co-exist Deployment options in SP core • For Native IPv4 environments, • Tunnel IPv6 in IPv4 • Enabling Dual-stack IPv4-IPv6 • Native IPv6 with dedicated network resources • For MPLS environments, • IPv6 Provide Edge solutions • IPv6 MPLS VPN solutions

IPv6 MigrationUsing ISATAP • Router as ISATAP gateway connecting users to IPv6 Internet. • Extends IPv6 access through IPsec tunnels of remote access clients. • MS XP/Vista support ISATAP clients BRAS Cybercafe environment ISATAP Gateway IPv4 ISP Network IPv6 Internet Mobile user on IPSec VPN IPSec Tunnel Gateway ISATAP Tunnels IPSec Tunnels L2TP Tunnels

Summary Adapt, Integrate & Co-exist • Adapt IPv6 in your network transport, however small or big it is. • Integrate it with the current network transport solutions with various scenarios and applications. • Make IPv6 co-exist in the current network environment • Half the battle WON.
