A little bit about me! Mrs. Zisk • Old name: Ms. Dusault • Went to Rutgers! • This is my 8th year teaching at OTS. • Coach track and x-country. • In my free time, I like to run, swim, hike, scuba dive, and do anything fun outside!
So what are we going to learn about? • We will explore topics covering over eleven thousand years of history! • Early human history: including the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, and Africa.
The Nitty Gritty- Grading • There are a number of different ways that I use within the classroom to evaluate what you have learned. • It is very important to know and understand how you will be graded (each of your classes will be different). • It is important to keep in mind that I reserve the right to score any of your work as a grade.
10% Class Participation • I reserve the right to change this grade if a student does not accurately portray their participation. • This is a simple 10% of your overall grade to achieve through good behavior and class participation. • You will judge your own participation and behavior during discussions, group/partner/individual work, and other class activities. • This helps you reflect on your performance and see what can be done to improve your participation. • Bringing necessary materials to class (pen, pencil, notebook, paper, homework) • Taking notes • Following directions • Working cooperatively in groups
Total score:_________ / 10 10% Notebook Check • Will help you stay organized! • Will make sure you have all the notes you need to study for quizzes, tests, and to do projects and homework assignments. • We will go over how to keep your binder in the next few days, and we will all make sure to practice it throughout the year. • Notebook checks will be unannounced a few times a marking period.
10% Homework • You will be given homework assignments throughout the marking period that connect to the material in class and help you prepare for quizzes and tests. • Homework will also help you identify important ideas and supporting details. • All homework assignments for the week will be on display in the classroom beginning Monday morning, and will also be available on Real Time the week assignments are due. • Late homework
30% Quizzes • Section quizzes will help reinforce material and are helpful to you when preparing for tests. • Quizzes are usually between 9 and 13 questions and can consist of multiple-choice questions, matching, fill in the blank, or short answer. • About once a week…
40% Tests and Projects • Tests and projects will be assigned at the end of a unit in order to evaluate everything you have learned in a unit. • Tests are usually between 20 and 35 questions and will consist of a variety of question types, such as multiple-choice, matching, short answers, and essays. • Projects will vary by unit and can include such things as dioramas, posters, research papers, etc.
Classroom Materials • YOU are responsible for bringing the appropriate materials to class every day. • Your grades will be negatively affected if you do not bring these materials everyday. • These materials include: • 1 section of a 3-ring binder • extra lined paper • pencil and pen • a thirst for knowledge!
Student Portfolios • The portfolio is an excellent place to store graded material that has been checked but should be safe and easily accessible to students. • Each student will have their own portfolio that will be kept in my classroom where they can store their class work, quizzes, tests, projects, etc. • I encourage you to bring graded materials home for parents to see.
Real Time Grades • In addition, you will be able to see you’re your current grade average. • Real Time is the easiest and most convenient way to check up on your progress in class. • Each student’s grades will be updated on our online system, Real Time, as each marking period progresses. • From the main website, www.tewksburyschools.org, click Links, For Parents, Real Time Parent Portal Access for Parents. • Here, you will be able to see each grade that you have received in the above categories mentioned.
Textbooks • Each student will receive one numbered textbook assigned to them for the school year. • This textbook, “History of Our World,” should be kept in a safe place at home for the duration of the school year and should be returned in the same condition at the end of the year. • Students will use this home copy to complete homework assignments, finish up projects if necessary, and prepare for quizzes and tests. • There is a class set of books for students to use while in school.
Absent Work • Each student will be responsible for getting make-up work from me when they are absent. • Any class work and homework missed will need to be completed within an acceptable time period, depending on how long you are gone. • If make-up work is not completed within the set time period, your grades will be affected. • Make-up work section*
Procedures • As soon as you enter my classroom, class has started. • 55 minutes might seem like a long time for class, but it will fly by if we waste any time. • Class discussion: • What are some examples of ways we should NOT enter the classroom? • What are some examples of ways we SHOULD enter the classroom?
Procedures: The DO NOW • Every single day you walk in my room there will be a DO NOW on the Smart Board. • This DO NOW will tell you… what to do! Now! • Usually it asks you to take out your homework, copy down homework, open your notebook, textbook, write something down, discuss something with a neighbor, etc. • Doing this DO NOW is part of your grade. • Class Participation • Notebook Check
Procedures: During Class • We will do a mix of different activities, even within one class period. • It is important to know when/where it is appropriate to do certain things (or else things are disrupted). • If you need to go to the bathroom or get a drink, put a thumbs up. • Sign in/Sign out/Take a pass • Only one student out at a time • CLOCK • If you have a question, RAISE YOUR HAND or come ask me ☺ • Talking out of turn disrupts class activities.

Transitions or Interruptions • Clap-Clap Clap-Clap-Clap • I raise my hand. • When you hear/see this, it means I need your attention. • Please repeat after me and bring your full attention.
Procedures: During Class • Fire Drill • Stop what you are doing. • Silently and orderly go out this door in a single file line. • We will walk along the sidewalk down to the fence and as a class stay in a single file line. • There I will take attendance. • You will remain silent until we come back and enter the classroom.

Procedures: When class is over • The bell does NOT dismiss you. • It is impolite to gather your things, inch out of your chair, and stare at the clock while I or one of your classmates is wrapping up class. • You will have plenty of time to get to your next class without bolting out of here, and it is dangerous to do so. • Just as you came in, you will exit, quietly and orderly. • I WILL make you come back in and exit properly if you do not do so the first time.
One quick note about being late • You have a long two minutes between each class. • You should not go to your locker between each class. • If you have a reason for being late (talking to a teacher) you need to get a note. • By coming in after the bells rings, you are disrupting the class and other students.
Classroom Materials • Includes • textbooks, colored pencils, crayons, markers, highlighters, desks, chairs, etc. • Every one of my students use these materials. (80 of them.) • Please treat them with care and as if they are yours. • We are lucky to have so many materials available to us. • The class will not leave until every material is properly put away, and the room is clean.
Mrs. Zisk’s Desk • You would not want one of your classmates looking at your work, so please be respectful. • Please do not touch anything on my desk unless I give you permission. • If you notice, there is a colored line on the floor around both sides of my desk. • Please do not cross this line unless I give you permission. • There are important things on my desk that are private, not just my things but other students’ as well.

We are the best class… hands down! Each of us is special :) • Brainstorm: What are the things that make you special and unique? • Use the back of the page to brainstorm. • You can use words (not sentences) and draw pictures. • Then we will trace our forearm and hand onto white paper. • All areas must be colored in. There should be no white space left on your paper. • Be creative with this. There is no right or wrong answer.

Working in Groups • In this class, we will be using group work often. Not everyday, but many times throughout the year. Questions to discuss with your group. Know what’s going on- one COLOR will be called to share each question. Why is learning to work with others important? What should GROUP WORK look like? How can we be respectful while disagreeing with others?
BPC- Big Paper Convos • Expectations: • There will be a few BIG pieces of paper around the room. • You will move in groups, BUT you will remain silent throughout this activity. • Using what you talked about with your classmates, respond once to each question on the big pieces of paper. • Please write neatly and large enough for people to see, but not so big that you take up other classmate’s space. • Try not to repeat other’s ideas.

First and most important…What is “social studies” and why are we here? • Social Studies = studying societies. • A society is a specific group of people who live in the same area. • Example: Ancient Egyptians
So.. What is “history?” • What is “history”? • From Greek word ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation” • The study of past events
First Activity • With your group, discuss the benefits of studying the past. • How can history help us? • What does it teach us? • How can we use it? • Each person in your group should then write one idea that the group discussed on a post-it.
Second Activity • With your group, discuss the problems and challenges of studying the past. • Why is it hard to study history? • Each person in your group should then write one idea that the group discussed on a post-it.
