Review of SDZ Construction Fundamentals • All SDZs, regardless of complexity, are drawn from a point or points of reference. • To construct an accurate and precise SDZ, you will need the following: • Compass for drawing circles and arcs • Protractor for measuring angles • Plotting scale for measuring distances • Fine-point pencil for drawing accuracy August 2003
Mils Scale Degrees Scale Index August 2003
The M240G medium machine gun and the M80 Ball Cartridge August 2003
The M240G Machine Gun is a general purpose machine gun. It fires the standard NATO 7.62 mm round and is used as a general support weapon. It has an integral, folding bipod and can also be mounted on a folding tripod. August 2003

Constructing a Batwing SDZ • Construct a batwing SDZ for the M240G Machine Gun firing M80 Ball cartridge with multiple fixed firing points and targets. • Map Scale: 1:25,000. • Dimensions of the SDZ for this weapon system are given in DA-PAM 385-63, Appendix B, Table B-1. August 2003
Plot the firing points and the baseline. • Plot the targets. • Draw a gun target lines on the extreme left and right firing positions. August 2003
Distance X • From Appendix B, Table B-1, find Distance X for the 7.62mm M80 Ball. • Distance X = 4100m August 2003
The left and right gun target lines are the left and right limits of fire. Distance X • Annotate Distance X on the legend. August 2003
Distance X 5° 5° • For the Dispersion Area, at the firing point on the left limit of fire, measure with a protractor a 5° Angle. Do the same on the right. • Draw tic marks as shown. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X 5° 5° • From where the left and right limits of fire intersect the firing line, draw a line through the tic marks out through Distance X. • This completes the Dispersion Area. August 2003
Distance Y • Distance Y is the maximum Distance downrange at which a lateral ricochet is expected to occur when a projectile is fired at a given quadrant elevation. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y • Using Table B-1, find the measurement for Distance Y. (ˆ4080m) 4073m • Distance Y = • Annotate Distance Y on the legend. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y • Place tic marks at Distance Y on both the right and left lateral limits of the Dispersion Area. • Next, determine angles P & Q. August 2003
Angles P & Q • Angles P & Q are used to determine the Ricochet Area. August 2003
Angle P • Angle P is the angle measured from the left and right side of the Dispersion Area from the firing point. (Round the angle to the nearest safe whole degree.) August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y P P • From Table B-1, find Angle P. • Angle P = 43.54° (ˆ44°) August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P • At the firing point, from the left and right limits of the Dispersion Area, measure 44° for the Ricochet Area, Angle P. • Draw tic marks as shown. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P • From the firing point, draw a straight line point through the tic marks. August 2003
Angle Q • Angle Q is the angle measured from the left and right side of the Dispersion Area from Distance Y. (Round the angle to the nearest safe whole degree.) August 2003
Q Q Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P • From the table, find Angle Q. • Angle Q = 38.90° (ˆ39°) August 2003
39° 39° Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P Q Q • At Distance Y, from the left and right limits of the Dispersion Area, measure 39° for Angle Q. • Draw tic marks as shown. August 2003
39° 39° Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P Q Q • Draw a straight line from the tic marks at Distance Y through the tic marks just drawn. • Next, find Distance W. August 2003
Distance W • Distance W is the maximum lateral distance a projectile will ricochet after impacting within the Dispersion Area. • Distance W defines the maximum lateral edge of the Ricochet Area. August 2003
39° 39° Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P Q Q • On both the right and left, lightly draw lines perpendicular to the lateral limits of the Dispersion Area. • Using Table B-1, find the measurement for Distance W. • Distance W = 1461m (ˆ1480m) August 2003
39° 39° Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P Q Q • Draw tic marks at the measurement of Distance W. • Draw a straight line through the tic marks and through the lines previously drawn for angles P and Q. August 2003
39° 39° Q Q Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y 44° 44° P P • This completes the Ricochet Area. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y Ricochet Area • This completes the Ricochet Area. • Annotate the Ricochet Area (Distance W) on the legend. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y Ricochet Area • From the right and left firing points and using Distance X as the radius, scribe an arc between the right and left limits of fire and the right and left limits of the Dispersion Areas. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y Ricochet Area • At Distance X, draw a straight line between the right and left limits of fire. • To complete the SDZ, erase any unnecessary lines. August 2003
Dispersion Area Distance X Distance Y Ricochet Area • At Distance X, draw a straight line between the right and left limits of fire. • To complete the SDZ, erase any unnecessary lines. August 2003
