Absolute Location? Absolute location describes the location of a place based on a fixed point on earth. The most common way is to identify the location using coordinates such as latitude and longitude. 30’North, 121’West
Relative Location • Describes an objects location in relation to another place on earth. Does not use coordinates. • The mall is near Chick Fil A nad Target
Global Positioning System • A network of orbiting satellites that send precise details of their position in space back to earth, where receivers calculate exact position.
Geographic Information Systems • GIS is the layering of multiple satellite images to show the shape, and contour of the earth’s surface, in relationship to human infrastructure (buildings, cities…) • Elevation of a town • Flood paths near cities • Snow Ski Slopes for Vacationers
