1. HOME SECURITY TIPS

   A spring-latch lock is easy prey for burglars who are "loiding" experts. Loiding is the method of slipping a plastic credit card against the latch tongue to depress it and unlock the door. A deadbolt defies any such attack. Use a solid core or metal door for all entrance points Use a quality, heavy-duty, deadbolt lock with a one-inch throw bolt Use a quality, heavy-duty, knob-in-lock set with a dead-latch mechanism Use a heavy-duty, four-screw, strike plate with 3-inch screws to penetrate into a wooden door frame Use a wide-angle minimum of a 160° peephole mounted no higher than 58 inches Install motion activated lighting on the sides and rear of your home. Post alarm stickers on windows and doors, as well as an alarm system sign in your yard. These can be found and purchased online and are inexpensive. Would be intruders are extremely afraid of alarms as it is a very noisy early warning device…even if you do not actually have an alarm…they don’t need to know that. Purchase and install a door security guard or door chain as are used in hotel rooms. This will allow you to partially open your door, and will help deter anyone from forcing past you. It is also excellent early warning for night time intrusions. Install a home security alarm system. There are several do it yourself options available. There is no need to pay for monitoring service. If your neighbors are aware and can call the police if a home alarm is activated, the police will arrive just as quick as if an expensive monitoring service called them.

   Do not let door to door salespersons inside your home. Do not let them see inside your door. It is a known tactic that they perform door to door reconnaissance to find out what homes are worth breaking into. In many cases you can ask if they have a city and county permit to conduct solicitation activities, and if they are registered in our area to go door to door. Check with the BBB to see if the company conducting door to door sales is an actual company. Many solicitors are often felons in other states. Many rapes, assaults and burglaries are committed by door to door solicitors. If your home appears secure, and they cannot tell if someone is home or not, they will probably move on. Leaving front doors open, garage doors open, gates open, and windows open appears as a “soft target” to them. Confront anyone parked for an extended amount of time. Ask them what they are doing, and why they are there. At the minimum get a vehicle make, model, color, and license plate number. Get to know your neighbors. If they are gone for an extended time, pick up their newspaper/mail. Park you car in their driveway for a day or two to make it look like someone is there.
