Digestion/Absorption • Breakdown of complex food components into simple components the body can take in and use • Approximately 90% of digestion takes place in the small intestine. • Multiple tiny fingerlike protrusions along the walls of the small intestine called villi. • These structures absorb the carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, water, vitamins and minerals.
Enzymes-Digestion • Proteins-breakdown food into simple components the body can absorb • Essential for the digestion/absoprtion process • Disease conditions arise when enzyme process inefficient or absent • Multiple enzymes at various sites to enable breakdown/processing of our many needs
