Saving the Economy • The War Industries Board (WIB) was established by President Woodrow Wilson to eliminate waste during the war • “Gasless Sundays” and “lightless nights” encouraged to save fuel • Days of the week delcared: “meatless”, “sweetless”, “wheatless”, “porkless”
What kind of cars were driven in 1918? • Cadillac Touring (the lucky ones) • Ford Model T (middle class)
Victory Gardens – to help the food supply, homeowners planted produce in their yards. Schoolchildren grew tomatoes and cucumbers in public parks.
Winning People Over • To popularize the war, the government set up a propaganda agency. • Propaganda is designed to influence people’s thoughts and actions (advertisement)
Anti-German Hysteria • Many Americans blamed and attacked German-Americans • Many people w/ German names lost jobs • Orchestras refused to play music of Mozart or Beethoven • Schools stopped teaching German language Hamburgers were re-named “liberty sandwiches”
The Great Migration • Large-scale movement of African Americans in great numbers from the rural South to cities in the North. (Occurred during and after WWI) • From 1910-1940, 1.75 million black people left the South
Reasons to Migrate North • Boll weevils (beetles) had infected cotton fields all over the South • 1,000s of jobs in railroads, meatpacking plants, and auto factories were available in the North • Jim Crow laws in the South • Better education opportunities in the North
The Chicago Defender • Chicago’s black newspaper, the Defender, encouraged southerners to move north • The Defender was distributed by railroad all over the South • In defense of Chicago’s cold winters: “To die from the bite of frost is far more glorious than that of the mob”
States in blue had the ten largest net gains of Af-Ams.States in red had the ten largest net losses.
Black Neighborhoods • Wary of white hostility in the South, Af-Am migrants preferred to live among settled black people in Northern cities. • Often found family & friends who had preceded them north • Harlem in NYC, Chicago’s South Side, Paradise Valley in Detroit, & Cleveland’s East Side
