  8. CPU-0500 Status Screens • Boiler Temperature • This is the temperature reading from the boiler sensor • DHW Temperature • This is the temperature reading from the DHW sensor (boiler mode only) Status Screens The status screens for boiler and mixing mode are shown to the right. Status screens will differ depending upon the control mode selected. To cycle through the different status screens, simply turn the control dial. Status Screen The CPU-0500 operates in either ‘Status’ or ‘Programming’ mode. The status screen will display various sensor readings and setpoints (targets). Some of the targets are predefined by the user, while others are automatically determined by a reset curve. • Low Temp System Temperature • Temperature of low temp system (mixing mode only) • Boiler Target • Boiler setpoint as defined by reset curve parameters • DHW Target • Setpoint for DHW tank (this is a fixed setpoint not affected by the reset curve) • Outdoor Temperature • Outdoor temperature as read by outdoor sensor (required for reset curve)

  9. CPU-0500 Programming Screens • Design Boiler Temperature • This is the maximum setting for the boiler, as recommended by the boiler manufacturer and is used for the reset curve calculation Programming Screen The programming screen is where the user inputs the relevant information and settings, such as DHW target, differential and outdoor reset parameters, when applicable. • Design Low Temperature System Temperature • This is the design low temperature system setting (mixing mode only) and is used for the reset curve for the low temperature system • Design Room Temperature • Approximate desired room temperature, this is required for the reset curve calculation

  10. CPU-0500 Programming Screens • Design Outdoor Temperature • Set this to the outdoor temp at which you would like to hit your max boiler temperature. To override the heat curve, set this to the highest possible value Programming Screen The programming screen is where the user inputs the relevant information and settings, such as DHW target, differential and outdoor reset parameters, when applicable. • Minimum Boiler Temp • This setting prevents mixing from occurring before the boiler loop is up to temperature, as defined by the user • Minimum Low Temp System Temperature • This setting is for the desired minimum temperature for the low temperature system, to override the reset curve, set equal to the design low temp system temperature

  11. CPU-0500 Reset Curve Parameters Outdoor Reset Parameters The CPU-0500 is an outdoor reset control; the control parameters entered by the user are used to create a reset curve so that the boiler target decreases as the outdoor temperature increases. This is an important energy saving feature for boiler installations. When in mixing mode, the CPU-0500 will operate the high and low temperature systems on separate reset curves. An example of a reset curve is shown below for a high and low temperature system.

  12. CPU-0500 Staging Theory The staging method utilized by the CPU-0500 is load based, and determined by the relationship between actual temperature, target temperature and differential. For all HBX controls, the differential is half above and half below the target – a differential of 10°F would be 5°F above the target and 5°F below. Actual Temperature 1st Stage Off 2nd Stage Off Differential Target Temperature 2nd Stage On 1st Stage On

  13. Example Applications: Single Stage Boiler w/out DHW This example application shows a single stage boiler being used to provide heat for a heat load, without DHW. The CPU-0500 controls the boiler pump and will adjust the boiler target based on the outdoor temperature (outdoor reset).

  14. Example Applications: Single Stage Boiler w/out DHW Important Programming Parameters (pages 11-13 of installation manual) • Boiler Selection • This setting is used to identify the type and number of boilers connected to the CPU-0500. For a single stage on/off, select ‘1’. This is the default setting for the CPU-0500. • Design Outdoor Temperature • Set this to the outdoor temp at which you would like to hit your max boiler temperature. To override the heat curve, set this to the highest possible value. The default value is shown . • Minimum Boiler Temp • This setting prevents mixing from occurring before the boiler loop is up to temperature, as defined by the user • Design Boiler Temperature • This is the maximum setting for the boiler, as recommended by the boiler manufacturer and is used for the reset curve calculation

  15. Example Applications: Boiler w/ DHW Priority This example application shows a parallel DHW setup, where the DHW pump is capable of drawing water through the boiler. This application requires the boiler pump to be shut down whenever there is a domestic demand. As can be seen below, the CPU-0500 controls both boiler and domestic pumps.

  16. Example Applications: Boiler w/ DHW Priority Important Programming Parameters (pages 11-13 of installation manual) • Boiler Selection • This setting is used to identify the type of boilers connected to the CPU-0500. For a modulating boiler, select ‘MOD’. • DHW Priority • Set to ‘ON’ for this application type. The priority time is 60 minutes or until the demand is satisfied. This setting is off by default. • Celsius & Fahrenheit • Use this setting to change the display from ° Celsius to ° Fahrenheit. The default temperature displayed is ° Fahrenheit. • DHW Boiler Setpoint • This setting is used to setup the desired boiler setpoint when there is a DHW demand. The default setting is 180°F.

  17. Example Applications: Boiler w/ DHW For DHW and heating applications involving closely spaced tee’s off of a primary boiler circuit, the boiler pump is required to run whenever there is a boiler demand, and the appropriate demand pump must also be energized.

  18. Example Applications: Boiler w/ DHW Important Programming Parameters (pages 11-13 of installation manual) • Boiler Selection • This setting is used to identify the type of boilers connected to the CPU-0500. For a 2 stage boiler set to ‘2’ for no rotation. • Warm Weather Shut Down (WWSD) • This setting is used to set the outdoor temperature at which CPU-0500 will go into WWSD. Above this temperature the system will shut off and ignore heating demands. • Heat Demand • Set to ‘ON’ to put a permanent heat demand on the CPU-0500, this may be done instead of using a thermostat. The default setting is off. • DHW Differential • This setting is used to set the Differential for the DHW tank. A 6 differential is 3 above and 3 below the DHW target.

  19. Example Applications: Staging 2 On/ Off Boilers The CPU-0500 will stage boilers based on time delay and load factors. Boiler rotation is also possible when two single stage boilers are connected to the CPU-0500, this feature allows for equal run time of the connected boilers.

  20. Example Applications: Staging 2 On/ Off Boilers Important Programming Parameters (pages 11-13 of installation manual) • Boiler Selection • This setting is used to identify the type of boilers connected to the CPU-0500. For 2 on/ off boilers set to ‘2RT’ if rotation is desired, otherwise set to ‘2’ for no rotation. • Boiler Minimum Stage Lag Time • When the boiler is set for two stages this setting will determine the minimum lag time between boiler stages. • Boiler Differential • This setting is for the differential for the boiler. A 20°F differential would be 10°F above and 10°F below the target. • Boiler Pump Selection • This setting is used to setup the boiler pump contact, when set to ‘On’, the boiler pump will come on when the boiler is enabled, otherwise it will come on with the demand signal.

  21. Modulation Output Pointers When the modulating output signal is enabled, a 4-20mA or 1-10VDC (use dipswitch on back) signal is used to control the connected device, such as a modulating boiler, a VFD or a modulating valve. In boiler staging mode, these options are only applicable when configuring a modulating boiler and ‘MOd’ has been selected as the boiler type in the boiler selection menu. • Minimum Modulation Percentage • This setting is used to set the lowest modulation level the boiler or device can go down to. This can also be used to set the minimum positions on valves. • Modulating Step Time & Staging Lag Time • This setting is used to set the desired time (in seconds) between steps when the boiler (needs to increase or decrease firing. For example, if a 20% increase (or decrease) is needed over 1 minute; 1 min = 60 s 60 s / 20% = 3 s/% is the time needed between steps to obtain the desired rate

  22. Example Applications: Injection Mixing For applications involving injection mixing, the CPU-0500 will operate an injection pump in PMIp mode and run the low temp system pump . For this type of application, the boiler usually controls it’s own pump.

  23. Example Applications: Injection Mixing Important Programming Parameters (pages 8-10 of installation manual) • Boiler Selection • This setting is used to identify the type of boiler connected to the CPU-0500. For a modulating boiler, set to ‘MOd.’. • Minimum Modulation Percentage • This setting is used to set the minimum modulation level that the connected device (VFD, valve, etc.) can go down to. It can be used to set the minimum positions on valves. • Mixing Modulating Mode • This setting is used to determine the minimum time between stepping up or down in modulating mode. • Mixing Type • This setting is used to select your mixing type. Set to ‘In’ when using a PMIp injection pump as shown in the previous slide.

  24. Example Applications: Floating Action Valve Mixing The CPU-0500 can operate a floating action mixing valve for mixing purposes. The low temperature system pump can be enabled with the boiler pump by using a relay, or can be setup to energize with the demand signal, as shown below. The low and high temperature systems will operate on separate reset curves.

  25. Example Applications: Floating Action Valve Mixing Important Programming Parameters (pages 8-10 of installation manual) • Boiler Selection • This setting is used to identify the type of boiler connected to the CPU-0500. Set to ‘FL’ when using a floating action (power open / power close) valve as shown in the previous slide.

  26. Example Applications: Dual Setpoints The CPU-0500 is capable of operating separate contactors for two different setpoints when operating in setpoint mode. Each setpoint has it’s own differential and can be either a heating or cooling setpoint. The setpoint contacts are dry contactors.

  27. Example Applications: Dual Setpoints Important Programming Parameters (pages 14-15 of installation manual) • Setpoint Temperature • This setting is used to set the desired temperature for each setpoint. • Setpoint Differential • This setting is used to set the differential for each setpoint. A 10°F differential would be 5°F above and °F below the setpoint. • SetpointLagtime • This setting is used to set a lag time for each setpoint relay and allows for a minimum off time to be setup. This can be used to prevent short cycling of the connected device. • Heating / Cooling Setpoint • This setting is used to configure each setpoint as a heating or cooling setpoint.

  28. Example Applications: Delta T Pumping In the example application shown below, the CPU-0500 will maintain a user defined constant temperature differential across a heating load by sending a modulating signal to a pump or VFD. This allows the CPU-0500 to operate as a Delta T pump control.

  29. Example Applications: Delta T Pumping Important Programming Parameters (pages 15-16 of installation manual) • Setpoint Differential • This setting is used to set the differential between the two temperature sensors. • SetpointLagtime • This setting is used to set a lag time for relay #1, and allows for a minimum off time to be setup. This can be used to prevent short cycling of the main circulation pump.

  30. Example Applications: Solar Thermal The CPU-0500 is capable of controlling solar thermal applications, or any other type of application requiring a contactor to close when there is a temperature difference detected. The high temp contact will close when the user defined high temperature has been reached in the primary storage tank, allowing flow to be diverted to another storage tank or a thermal dump.

  31. Example Applications: Solar Thermal Important Programming Parameters (pages 15-16 of installation manual) • Setpoint Differential • This setting is used to set the differential between solar storage tank and the solar collector. When the difference exceeds this , relay #1 will engage. • SetpointLagtime • This setting is used to set a lag time for relay #1, and allows for a minimum off time to be setup. This can be used to prevent short cycling of the main circulation pump. • Heating / Cooling Setpoint • This setting is used to configure the setpoint as a heating or cooling setpoint. This should be set to ‘on’ for solar applications, such as the one shown in the previous slide. • High Temperature Dump • This setting is used to determine the temperature that the high temperature contact (relay #2) enages.

  32. Example Applications: Geothermal - Single Tank The CPU-0500 is capable of controlling single tank heatpump/chiller applications. The controller operates the reversing valve and maintains the tank at a hot or cold temperature based on the demand signal from a connected thermostat. The outdoor sensor allows the tank temperature to be maintained at a target temperature as prescribed by a reset curve.

  33. Example Applications: Geothermal - Single Tank Important Programming Parameters (pages 16-18 of installation manual) • System Temperatures 1 and 2 • These settings are used for setting the desired heating and cooling targets. When there is no thermistor connected to terminals 7 and 9, the control assumes single tank operation. • Heating / Cooling Differentials • These settings are used to set the heating and cooling differentials. The heating and cooling differentials can be different values. • Cold / Warm Weather Shutdown • This setting is used to set the minimum and maximum outdoor temperatures that cooling and heating demands will be acknowledged by the control. It is important that the CWSD temperature is greater than the WWSD for single tank applictions. • Use Backup Temperature • If a backup (stage 2) is used this can either be configured to come on based on outdoor temperature or time delay. When set to ‘OFF’ it is based on time delay.

  34. Example Applications: Geothermal – 2 Tank The CPU-0500 is capable of controlling 2 tank heatpump applications. In this example application, a two position valve is actuated with the reversing valve to divert flow to the cold tank when in cooling mode. By using the outdoor sensor, not only will the reset curve be used, but the cold and warm weather shut down feature may be utilized as well. The extra sensor installed on terminals 7 & 9 is how the CPU-0500 determines that it is controlling a 2 tank system.

  35. Example Applications: Geothermal – 2 Tank Important Programming Parameters (pages 16-18 of installation manual) • Design Outdoor Temperature • This setting is used for a reset curve calculation for the hot tank. The hot tank target will then vary with outdoor temperature. Set to ‘Off’ to disable this feature. • Heating or Cooling Priority • This setting tells the control what to do in the event of simultaneous heating and cooling demands. This may happen when both hot and cold tanks are off targets, or multiple demand signals are applied. • Minimum Lag Time • This setting is used to set the minimum lag time between stages for multiple stage applications. • Stage Selection • This setting is used to identify the number of stages connected to the CPU-0500. For a 2 stage heat pump, select ‘2’.

  36. Example Applications: Geo – CPU-0500 to THM-0200 The demand input signal is very important for single tank applications as the CPU-0500 needs to know when the tank needs to be hot and when it needs to be cold. When there is no demand signal applied to the control, the heat pump will not try and maintain a setpoint, which is an important energy saving feature.
