  1. WARM UP 11/14 • What is an organ? • What system consists of the skin and hair? • What layer does the skin develop from? • What kind of tissues do you think you find in the skin? • List as many functions of skin as you can think of.

  2. NOTES Ch 5 11/14 Integumentary System Intro

  3. Parts – skin, hair, nails, skin glands Develops at week 17 from the ectoderm layer

  4. SKIN • Thin flat organ that covers the body • Largest organ (about 20 sq. feet) • Known as the integument or the cutaneous membrane

  5. FUNCTION • Protection against a. Mechanical damage (bumps, cuts) b. Chemical damage (acids, bases c. Thermal damage (heat and cold) d. Ultraviolet damage (UV light) e. Microbes (bacteria, etc) f. Dehydration (waterproof)

  6. Temperature Regulation (homeostasis) a. Lose heat – sweat glands; dilate capillaries b. Gain heat – shivering; constricting capillaries

  7. Synthesis – Vitamin D • Sensory – receptors detect heat, cold, pressure, pain • Excretion – gets rid of water, salts, urea (sweat)

  8. EPIDERMIS DERMIS *SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER UNDERNEATH Composed of 2 layers:

  9. Below the dermis SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER • Spongy and porous • Adipose and reticular tissues • Anchors skin to muscles
