WHAT IS TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY? Trenchless technology is basically making tunnel below the surface and installing service lines like gas pipes or telecommunication cables without disruption to flow and minimum damage to the environment.
TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY METHODS • New Installation • Rehabillation and Renovation
New Installation • Microtunelling • Horizontal directional Drilling • Short Drive System • Guided Drilling
Microtunnelling • Remote controlled mechanical tunnel systems where the soil is removed from cutting head with the new pipe line which is advanced by pipe jacking
Horizontal Directional Drilling • Genraly used for installing pressure pipes under major obstacles like large rivers, airports etc. • Tunnels of approximately 1.5 km long and of up to 1200mm diameter can be made with the help of horizontal directional drilling.
Short Drive Systems • Auger Boring • Impact Moling • Rod pushing • Pipe Ramming
Auger boring • Auger Boring also known as “bore and jack” • It involves simultaneous jacking a steel case forward while removing soil via rotating auger flight.
Impact Moling • Moling is a method, which forms the borehole by compressing the Earth that immediately surrounds the compacting device.
Rod pushing • Rod pushing is the technique in which bore of 50mm diameter is formed by displacement . It is used for the installation of pipes of 15mm diameter over 30-40 mm lengths.
Pipe Ramming • Pipe Ramming, the pipe is rammed through the soil by using a device attach to the end of the pipe. This method is not suitable where there are solid rock formations. Usually up to 2000 mm diameter pipes can be laid by this technique.
Guided Drilling • Guided drilling employs the excavation or soil displacement with compact light weight rig for rapid mobilisation.
Rehabilitation & Rennovation • Pipe Bursting • Pipe Eating • Relining the existing pipes • Localised repair • Sliplining
Pipe Bursting • An existing pipeline can be replaced with pipeline of the same or larger dimension without opening the ground.
Pipe Eating • Pipe eating is online microtunnel replacement technique. • The existing pipeline is crushed and removed through a new pipeline.
Relining the Existing Pipes • This method require access, usually by manholes, at both end of the pipes. • Pipe is relined at the places where the joints have moved or sections are missing ,but the passage should be available.
Localized Repairs • Local defects may be found in pipes are due to cracking or joint failures. • Chemical grouting with urethane and similar materials are used in sewer rehabilitation.
Sliplining • A new pipeline of smaller diameter is inserted into the defective pipe. • The inserted pipe is then expanded to fit tightly against the existing wall.
Pre-requisites • Site investigation • Condition survey • Underground detection
Advantages of “No-Dig” Technology • Reduces damages of valuable surface. • Save resources. • Accident free. • Avoids traffic jam • Reduces impact on environment. • Saves underground space.
Conclusions • With all round developments in various fields like petrochemicals where conveyance of gas, crude and refined products over long distances is common, telecommunication and water supply and sewerage etc. It is becoming increasingly necessary that these lines are laid underground leaving space above surface comparatively free. i.e., Adoption of trench less technology is the only remedy.
