Syllabus Continued REQUIRED TEXT Notes for CE482 Elementary Structural Designby Dr. Hans H. Gesund Manual of Steel Construction, Load and Resistance Factor Design, 3rd ed. American Institute of Steel Construction, Inc., 2001. COURSE DESCRIPTION Application of principles of solid mechanics to the design of steel, timber, and reinforced concrete members and structures. Emphasis is on basic ideas and their application to practical design of relatively simple structures according to the building codes.
Syllabus Continued GRADING POLICY Final averages will be computed as follows: Homework 24 % Midterm 38 % Final Exam 38 % • Lower cut-offs for letter grades A, B, C, D will be 90, 80, 70, 60 respectively. However a slight upward adjustment of the grades may be made if, in the instructor’s opinion, the grades are too low. • Homework assignments will be made throughout the semester. All homework must be submitted at the start of class on the assigned date. Late papers will not be accepted except in the case of extreme illness or officially sanctioned absence from campus. • A grade of zero will be given for all unexcused absences from exams. Make-ups will be given only in cases of extreme illness or officially sanctioned absence from campus. Requests for make-up exams must be made before the scheduled test if possible.
Syllabus Continued ENGINEERING ETHICS It will be assumed that each student subscribes to a professional code of ethics that is the basis for their behavior in class. Any and every case where these ethics are violated will be dealt with according to the provisions in the Student Code. The minimum penalty specified by the Student Code for cheating is an E in the course.

We will spend the first few weeks on steel design. • You will need to bring your Manual of Steel Construction and Lectures on Steel Design (first section of notes) to class each night. • WARNING: EACH CLASS MEETING IS EQUIVALENT TO ABOUT ONE WEEK DURING THE REGULAR SEMESTER.
Introduction Before we can discuss each material, we must know what loads we are designing for and how to compare those loads to the strength of the material. Before we begin steel design we will discuss: • Loads • Design Philosophies
LOADS All loads fall into two main categories: • Dead Loads • Live Loads
Dead Loads • Fixed position, gravity service loads (permanent) • Structural members • Plumbing • HVAC • Floor coverings • Suspended ceilings • Etc.
Live Loads • Gravity loads acting when the structure is in service, but varying in magnitude and location. • Human occupants • Furniture • Stored goods • Vehicles • Environmental Loads
Environmental Loads • Live loads but usually treated separately. They include: • Snow • Ice • Wind • Etc.
Building Code Live Loads • Live loads are usually specified in Building Codes • We will reference the Kentucky Building Code (see the appendix to the steel section of the class notes) • A reduction to the live load is provided based on the probability that the entire building will not be subjected to the full combination of loads at one time.
Live Load Reduction Factor L = Lo (0.25 +15/√Ai), Ai in square feet L = Lo (0.25 +4.57/√Ai), Ai in square meters
Influence Area, Ai • Tributary area times 2 for beams • Tributary area time 4 for columns • Tributary area is the loaded area attributed to a member.
