Today’s Teleconference/Webinar Moving Forward with Performance Improvement: • Focus on performance improvement from the beginning • Reignite your performance improvement efforts if you are in a “post-assessment lull”
Steps in Performance Improvement (PI) – NPHPSP Users’ Guide, 2006 • Organize Participation for Performance Improvement • Prioritize Areas for Action • Explore “Root Causes” of Performance • Develop and Implement Improvement Plans • Regularly Monitor and Report Progress
Organize Participation for PI • Start with Leadership Support • Create a Structure for Success • Incorporate PI into a broader planning process • Form a high-level steering committee • Assign subcommittees or improvement teams to specific priority areas • Utilize a quality improvement collaborative • Plan to share results
Plan Post-Assessment Activities from the Beginning: • Determine how the assessment results will be used • Identify leadership, staff support, and stakeholders • Establish timeline for initial post-assessment activities (sharing results, establishing priorities)
Communicate with Assessment Participants: • Plan for using assessment results • Who will be responsible for post-assessment activities • Timeline for sharing results and for acting on results • Options for their involvement in post-assessment activities (role, time commitment, other expectations)
Greetings from Where sometimes nothing happens, despite great intentions
What causes a Post-Assessment Lull? In the “Q/A” box above, type in either: • What has caused a post-assessment lull in your jurisdiction or… • What do you think might cause a lull?
Reasons for ending up in Lullsville • No plan from the outset of what to do with the results • No one took a leadership role to follow up • Leadership changes • Staff turnover or shortages • Overwhelmed by improvements needed • Competing priorities • Lost interest
Moving beyond Lullsville • Step 1: Identify Concern • Motivation • Relevance • Leadership Support • Timeliness • Sustainability • Step 2: Identify or Develop Solutions to Address Concern
When the Concern is Timeliness • Review along with other annual reports or report cards (Healthy People 2010, Kids Count, etc. • Connect to current issues or anniversary events • Highlight results during annual association meeting and conferences
When the Concern is Sustainability • Collaborate with partners on funding proposals to address priorities • Look for an active group to sponsor or adopt a related ES • Get agreement from accountable entities and staff • Utilize results to meet categorical assessments or requirements
