  4. Performance Specifications

  5. Solar Radiation Rejection • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 has superior immunity to solar radiation and other external IR radiation sources.

  6. Fog Resistance

  7. Performance Certifications • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 Detector is the world’s first and only open path detector to meet agency performance requirements on both LEL•m and ppmm scales

  8. Comparison with Competition • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 excels or compares well with other products in the market across several categories: • Sensors specifications • Environmental specifications • Regulatory approvals • Bidirectional communications • Energy efficiency

  9. Sensor, Electrical, and Mechanical Specifications † Also available in 0 – 5,000 ppm-m methane and 0 – 2,000 ppm•m and 0 – 2 LEL•m propane. ‡ Aluminum, stainless steel. * Includes mounting hardware. ** Short range unit, medium and long range unit.

  10. Environmental Specifications • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 has the widest operational temperature range among competing products

  11. Environmental Specifications (Cont.) • The ULTIMA OPIR-5’s relative humidity and pressure ranges are on par with those of competing products

  12. Regulatory Approvals

  13. Digital Communication

  14. Detector Placement • Open path detectors should be installed based on several considerations: • Hazard conditions within the installation area covered • Ventilation rates, direction, and presence of recirculation and dead zones • Sensitivity to low (geometric) sunlight, fog, and reflections • Powerful sources of electromagnetic emissions like high powered electrical towers • Structures that may interfere with line of sight * Health and Safety Executive, Offshore Division,” Fire and Explosion Strategy, Issue 1,” 2004.

  15. Installation • When installing an ULTIMA OPIR-5 detector, it is useful to consider the following: • Vibration can create issues • Solid foundation improves alignment integrity • The longer the line of sight path, the more solid the foundation required • Maintain a 6” to 12” radius around the line of site beam to avoid reflective interference from piping and supports • For outdoor installations, consider maximum snow levels • Good immunity to fog, steam, and rain but immunity degrades over longer distances • Avoid pedestrian traffic or overhead cranes • Keep beam low and down wind for heavy gases like propane and high for light gases like methane

  16. Wiring Ultima OPIR-5 Receiver

  17. 5 LEL•m 5,000 ppm-m (0.1 LEL•m) Methane Gas Concentration (ppm-m) Methane Gas Concentration (LEL•m) 0 4 12 20 AO (mA) Split Concentration Range • With the split range function, users can monitor the entire span of gas concentration with a single analog signal • Reduces wiring and commissioning costs

  18. Alignment • Simple alignment process • Arm or base mounts available • Display • Menus activated by magnet • Enables easy alignment, setup & diagnostics

  19. Maintenance • As with other combustible sensors, the ULTIMA OPIR-5 should be included in the plant maintenance schedule* • Gas check frequency depends on operating conditions (ex. dusty, corrosive, or damp environment) • Before repair or maintenance, the gas detector should be removed to a safe place outside the area being protected • If the hazard is still potentially present, it will be necessary to use a replacement gas detector in the area until the original detector is reinstated * BS EN 50073:1999 “Guide for the selection, installation, use and maintenance of apparatus for the detection and measurement of combustible gases or oxygen.”

  20. Diagnostics • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 has self-diagnostics that inform users when certain types of device failures have occurred

  21. HART • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 is available with HART for better efficiency with remote communication • Only the primary scale, LEL•m or split range, connects through HART • Benefits of the HART-equipped ULTIMA OPIR-5: • Better diagnostics of problems • Improved management of maintenance history and event logging • Flexible and accurate digital transmission • Effective cost control of devices in the field • Installation savings due to fewer wires

  22. HART – Analog Signal for Faults Because HART requires a minimum current for operation, the ULTIMA OPIR-5’s fault conditions use 3.5 mA as minimum analog output On HART-equipped unit, user must select the HART-modified AO in order use AO values below 3.5 mA

  23. AMS Device Manager • Asset management and process improvement • Check compliance to calibration schedule • Coordinate calibrations so as to reduce labor cost • Aggregate calibration to a control room • Track gas level remotely • Read fault conditions from control room; before sending technician to the field

  24. Applications • Area monitoring where there is a clear line of sight • Perimeters • Processing modules • Process segregation • Tunnels

  25. Offshore Oil and Gas • Drilling and production operations • Separation • Compression • HVAC inlets

  26. Pipeline and Storage Operations • Compressor stations • Valve manifolds • Tank farms

  27. HVAC and Wastewater • Bus Garages • Train Stations • Tunnels

  28. Sales Strategies • The ULTIMA OPIR-5 is a product with all time firsts: • First and only open path detector to meet agency performance requirements on both LEL and ppm scales • First among major open path models to be certified to FM Approvals, EN, and IECEx performance standards • First to offer split range scale for ppm-m and LEL-m monitoring • First to be certified for operation at -55C

  29. Sales Strategies (Continued) • No tools required for alignment at any range • It is possible to align the open path detector without a scope at 100 m or more • Integral display • Reduces installation time and total cost to own

  30. Conclusion • The Ultima OPIR-5 compares well with other open path detectors in the market • Repeatability • Linearity • Operating temperature range

  31. Conclusion (Continued) • The instrument’s dual concentration range and integral display are differentiators • No other detector offers a performance-certified dual range • Most commercial models require a handheld or controller to read gas concentrations or perform maintenance • The Ultima OPIR-5 open path detector is well positioned to meet users’ demands for enhanced safety and longevity
