Anxiety And Adrenal Fatigue We have all heard that stress and anxiety is bad for us, but did you know it can actually poison your body? Yeah. Scary right? When we are stressed or in a state of anxiety our body produces hormones which induce the ‘Fight or Flight’ response. This is a phenomenon which is built in to our operating system to protect us from danger. Imagine, in caveman times you are out and about and you see a bear. The adrenaline kicks in which gives you a burst of energy to run away (or fight off the bear-I know which one I’d prefer). That’s awesome for really dangerous situations, however how often do you see a bear or are in a life threatening situation in everyday life? The body’s‘Fight or Flight’ response is really handy, especially when we’re in those life threatening situations. However, we now live in a fast paced society with a million things happening all at once and are therefore in a constant state of fear and therefore stress. Fear for not having enough money, fitting in to society, not having the ‘right’ figure, not having top performing kids, not being good enough, rejection, the list goes on. WWW.INSIDETHEFUZZYHEAD.COM
Anxiety And Adrenal Fatigue Fear induces the stress response, and so if we are in a constant state fear, we feel stressed and therefore consistently produce the hormones which give us energy to fight or take flight. You may be thinking ‘ohthat’s awesome I will be unstoppable with all this extra energy my body is giving me’. And you would be right…. for a very limited time! The problem with constantly producing high levels of adrenaline hormones is that the systems which produce and secrete them become fatigued. Our supply runs out and we become depleted and therefore exhausted. This is commonly known as Adrenal Fatigue. Trust me it is not fun. Adrenal Fatigue is exhausting. It takes a long time to recover and build up the energy stores in your body again. In the meantime you will likely feel burnt out, get sick often because your immune system is weak, feel tired and lethargic, and basically just BLEH. If you rest, reduce stress, live a healthy lifestyle, eat good food and seek treatment therapies you will feel better sooner, rather than if you just push through hoping it will treat itself. Anxiety And Adrenal Fatigue The Key is to reduce overall stress in your life. If you can manage this, you will feel better both mentally and physically and your body will be forever grateful. If you want to learn more about this, there is a really great description in the book ‘Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ’ by Giulia Enders. She explains the body systems in a way that is easy to understand, yet very informative. It is always a good idea to learn about gut health, because it is very important for your entire body, but importantly mental health! Please note: All opinions in this article are my own.
