  2. A B O U T The Royal Star Magnolia is also referred to as a small, low-growing, flowering tree that is typically grown as a rounded shrub. Royal Star Magnolia makes an excellent hedge or screen because of its diminutive size. It prefers full sun and moist soil, and its young, star-shaped white flowers bloom in late winter to early spring. When partially shaded, the Royal Star Magnolia Tree grows noticeably taller and is tolerant of a variety of soil types.

  5. T E M P E R A T U R E The lowest cold tolerance for star magnolias is zone 4, or -30 degrees Fahrenheit. But it can suffer damage from wind or frost, heavy snowfall and ice, and especially its blossoms. Between 30% and 50% of humidity is what it requires.

  6. F E R T I L I Z E R Star magnolias rarely, if ever, need fertilizer. Apply an all-purpose fertilizer in the early spring, before any growth materializes. Get a phosphorus-rich fertilizer to promote stronger root growth and potential bloom production. For information on how much to use, refer to the product label.

  7. P R U N I N G In order to avoid losing the flowers from the following year, prune the plant roughly as soon as it has finished blooming because it produces flowers on old wood (growth from the previous year). Magnolia trees typically receive only light pruning.
