Purpose of Latrobe Program • Gain an understanding of: • What it is like to be at university • How you learn at university • How a university is structured
Teachers involved • Miss Hlede – program coordinator. Based in Outreach Office (room 215) on Level 2 of PS3 building • Mrs Tims and Mr Bastion – assisting classes and research groups, will be working in classrooms
Expectations • Act like adults – mature, quiet inside buildings and respectful to others working in the university • Wear uniform correctly – school uniform everyday, except Thursday 14th March • When inside buildings – KEEP LEFT, inside voices, • Stay INSIDE the moat and stay OUT of Therapy • If any of these are not upheld – you lose independence and privileges
School of Molecular Sciences • Part of the Science, Technology and Engineering Faculty • Consists of the department of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics and School of Pharmacy • We are based in this School when at the university, listen to lecturers that are a part of this school.
Buildings we will be in • PS3 – Physical Sciences 3 building • PS4/LIMS 2 - Physical Sciences 4 (name change) • HS1 and MAR – Health Sciences 1 and Martin Building • A – Agora • L – Library
Public Transport • Trams stop on Plenty Road/Kingsbury Drive – walk down Science Drive and turn right to PS3 • Buses stop near trams or along Science Drive. Get off at the stop next to Thomas Cherry Building (this is next to PS3
Timetable • Students will get bus from school outside Buckley Hall at 8.30am on first Tuesday and Wednesday, and return to school by the end of the school day • Students are to get THEIR OWN WAY TO LATROBE UNI EVERY OTHER DAY – meet at 8.45am, and leave around 3pm
What to bring • Bag – any bag that fits what you need to carry with you for the day • Note book/exercise book and pencil case • Laptop and charger – from Friday 15th March • Water bottle and lunch – either bring your own or buy it there • iPad – can be brought if you have one and want to use it to help with research • Folder to keep all work and handouts together • Camera, phone and any connection cables
What to do in lectures • Fill seats from the front • TAKE NOTES!! – important/interesting facts, any questions, a topic you could base your project on (lecturers will give us PPT files, so DON’T copy everything down) – Your notes will be checked AND assessed! • Lecturers will have question time at end, but ask questions throughout lecture as well • Do not bring in food or drink (other than water) in lecture theatres
Transport issues/sick • If you have missed your bus/train/tram or there are issues with them and you will be late – CALL MISS HLEDE – explain where you are, what time you expect to arrive. • If you are ill – YOU (not your parents) need to CALL MISS HLEDE and say you are not coming in and why • Do not ring the school! • Miss Hlede – 0488 601 228
