  1. CHAPTER 7 The Musculoskeletal System

  2. The Musculoskeletal System ANATOMY-the science of the structure of the body and the relationships of its parts to each other Physiology-the function of the body

  3. THE SKELETAL SYSTEM • FIVE FUNCTIONS • Supports the body • Protects main organs • Movement and anchorage of muscles • Mineral storage • Hemopoiesis

  4. Joints • Joints- where two bones come together

  5. Ligaments • Ligaments • Holds the joint together • Strong non-elastic bands of dense tissue provides stability and limits joint to specific ROM

  6. Muscular System • Muscles • Responsible for movement • Able to contract (shorten) and relax (lengthen) • Muscle motion in a joint is caused by muscle contraction and gravity • Muscle must have a nerve and blood supply • Nerve- responsible for stimulating the muscle to contract • Blood- brings nourishment and oxygen and carries away waste

  7. Point of reference Standing erect with palms out Define terms Abduction Adduction Rotation Flexion Extension Proximal Distal Anterior Posterior Anatomical Position

  8. MUSCLES My/o Myos/o Fascia- cover, support, and separate muscles Fasci/o Tendons Ten/o tend/o, tendin/o Ankyl/o- crooked, bent, stiff Cervic/o Neck (cervix – neck of uterus) Lumb/o Lower back (loin) Thorax Chest/pleural cavity Medical Terminology- Root words

  9. Medical Terminology ROOT Words • Oste/o = Bone • Myel/o = bone marrow • Chondr/o = cartilage • Arthr/o = joint • Burs/o = bursa (sac covering bone) • Synov/i= synovial fluid around joint • ROOT WORD • Ortho – straight, correct, upright • Spondyl/o = vertebra

  10. -itis = inflammation -algia = pain -sclerosis = abnormal hardening - ia =condition oma = tumor osis – abnormal condition Suffixes meaning pertaining to -ac -ine -al -ior -ar -ory -ary -ous -eal -tic -ical -ial -ic Medical Terminology-Suffixes

  11. Assignment • Pg 104 - DRAW 7-3 – distinguish different bones by different colors • Label and color • Cranial bones • Frontal , temporal, occipital, parietal • Facial bones • Maxillary, Mandibular, nasal

  12. More root words/suffixes etc. • Hemat/o- formation of red blood cells • Ortho – straight, correct, upright • Spondyl/o = vertebra • Vertrebr/o = vertebra, spinal column • Scopy-visual examination • Scopic- pertaining to visual examination

  13. Define the following • Ankylosis • Arthroscopic • Arthroscopy • Bursitis • Chondroma • Osteitis • Orthotics • Osteoarthritis • Osteochondroma • Osteomyelitis • Spondylitis • Synovitis • Vertebral
